Majority approves of Mayor Ford's handling of Occupy Toronto protesters

Just over 6 of 10 approve of the mayor's handling of the Occupy Toronto protest; fewer than half think the movement accomplished anything

TORONTO, Nov. 24, 2011 /CNW/ - In a recent Forum Research poll of 1,029 Toronto residents, it was found that the majority of those polled approve of the way Mayor Rob Ford has handled the Occupy Toronto protesters (61%), with approval being highest among older residents (69% 55+, 60% 35-54, 51% 18-34).

Toronto residents were also asked if they thought the Occupy Toronto protesters had accomplished anything during their protests that began on October 15th, with fewer than half of those polled thinking they did (46%). Residents of Toronto-East York were the most likely to think the protesters accomplished something (56%; compared to 45% North York, 43% Scarborough, and 39% Etobicoke / York). Not surprisingly, those who believe the Occupy Toronto protesters accomplished something were significantly more likely to disapprove of Mayor Rob Ford's handling of the movement (65%; compared to 35%).

"Torontonians are giving their mayor a thumbs-up on his handling of this sensitive issue," said Forum Research president Dr. Lorne Bozinoff. "Although approval ratings for his management of the Occupy Toronto protests are still strongest with his base, significant support among younger voters on this issue will provide Ford with positive momentum."

Methodology

The poll was conducted by Forum Research with the results based on an interactive voice response telephone survey of 1029 randomly selected Toronto residents aged 18 or older. The poll was conducted on November 23rd, 2011. Questions were asked of voters in the order reported as a standalone survey, not part of an omnibus.

Results based on the total sample are considered accurate +/- 3.1%, 19 times out of 20. Subsample results will be less accurate. Margins of error for subsample (such as age, gender) results are available at www.forumresearch.com/samplestim.asp.

Where appropriate, the data has been statistically weighted to ensure that the sample reflects the actual population according to the latest Census data.
