Major campaign in support of Banques alimentaires Québec: the SAQ offers you generous wines

MONTREAL, May 9 /CNW Telbec/ - The Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) is joining with the Banques alimentaires Québec (BAQ) network of food banks and placing its outlet network at BAQ's service to support food assistance in Quebec. Between May 13 and 15, consumers will be encouraged to visit their local SAQ outlet and buy a bottle of white wine. For each bottle of white wine sold, the SAQ will donate $1 to BAQ. In addition, for each bottle purchased of six whites placed at certain aisle ends, the supplier concerned will donate $1 to $1.50 to BAQ. Customers will also be urged to make a $3 donation at the checkout counter, and those who do will receive a booklet of taste tag stickers.

Long associated with the pleasures of the table, the SAQ believes that Quebecers are entitled to have enough to eat. By joining forces with Banques alimentaires Québec and holding this fundraising activity in its outlet network, the SAQ hopes to make its customers aware of this cause and to make a real difference for the less fortunate members of our society.

Also aware of the importance of the cause, comedian, storyteller and television host Boucar Diouf has agreed to get involved with the campaign against hunger. "Food assistance is probably the cause that matters the most to me," he says. "Every day we're reminded that, even here in Quebec, hundreds of thousands of people find themselves with very little to eat or facing the terrible decision of whether to buy quality food or pay the rent."

Spring is always a difficult time for Quebec food banks. "This contribution from the SAQ and its partners couldn't come at a better moment," said Daniel Tremblay, chairman of the BAQ's board of directors. "Food banks have a great need for support. The food and monetary donations received during the holidays are gone but the need for food is still there. We sincerely hope that the SAQ's appeal for generosity will be heard. This is a helping hand we can really use."

Food assistance in Quebec

With a significant 12.3% increase in the number of people who have turned to emergency food programs since 2009 and a huge 38% increase in the number of persons assisted since 2008 (including meal services), Quebec's population continues to be among the most affected by food insecurity.

In March 2010, Quebec's some 1,000 aid agencies (including 18 regional food banks affiliated with Moisson) assisted more than 310,000 individuals - providing more than 154,000 instances of emergency food assistance - to provide them with enough healthy food to sustain themselves.
