Leadership On Issues That Matter To Women Most

Premier McGuinty Highlights Ontario Liberal Plan To Help Families

TORONTO, Sept. 26, 2011 /CNW/ - Premier Dalton McGuinty spoke to women about the Ontario Liberal plan "Forward. Together." at a lunch event hosted by Catalyst Canada.

"We know that women are the heart of strong families, strong communities and a strong economy, and they are certainly the heart of our Ontario Liberal family," said McGuinty. "We're stronger because of the voices, values and progressive ideas they bring to the table."

In the McGuinty Liberal cabinet, women are responsible for almost 80 per cent of the provincial budget. The perspectives and leadership of Ontario Liberal women are delivering positive, progressive results like full-day kindergarten, increased breast-cancer screenings for women at risk, and the Ontario Child Benefit.

"There is a lot at stake in this election," said McGuinty. "It's about choosing a vision for the future of our province. Only the Ontario Liberals have a plan and a team that best represents the priorities of families."

McGuinty was joined by women candidates from the Ontario Liberal Party and spoke about his plan for new programs to help families. "Forward. Together." includes:

  • A 30 per cent tuition cut for middle-income families and 60,000 more postsecondary spaces
  • House calls for Ontarians who have difficulty with mobility issues
  • Healthy Home Renovation Tax Credit worth 15 per cent of up to $10,000 in renovations per year that help seniors make changes such as a ramp to replace the front steps
  • Personalized Cancer Risk Profile, using medical and family history to measure the risk of cancer for all Ontarians
  • After-school programming for 6-12 year olds
  • Summer learning camps in every school board for struggling students.

"Women in our caucus have helped us to achieve great things on the issues that matter most — stronger education, good jobs, better health care and more help for families struggling to get ahead," said McGuinty. "We're creating a brighter future for our children and grandchildren, and women in the Ontario Liberal Party play a big part in that."

The Hudak PCs have $14 billion in unfunded giveaways and tax cuts that would mean deep cuts to hospitals and schools. The Horwath NDP would introduce a crushing $9 billion in job-killing taxes.  Both would take Ontario off track at the worst time.
