Kia Canada Team finishes in 2nd position in the SIRIUS Satellite Radio Presidents Cup at the 2011 Targa Newfoundland Rally

MISSISSAUGA, ON, Sept. 26, 2011 /CNW/ - Kia Canada is proud to announce that team Designated Drivers finished second in the SIRIUS Satellite Radio Presidents Cup, Manufacturers Challenge, at the 2011 Targa Newfoundland Rally.

This prestigious award is reserved for manufacturers who have entered one or more vehicles in any combination of Grand Touring, Classic, Modern and Open competitions, and achieved top overall results in all vehicle classes.

To the uninitiated, the Targa Newfoundland is a 2,220 kilometre-long gruelling event that is the equivalent to the Ironman of rally racing. The Kia Forte Koup, number 99, challenged 61 other tough candidates in four different classes.

The team raced with the goal of promoting MADD Canada, thus raising awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and reinforcing the need to always drive responsibly. To further support this message, the Kia Koup had been specially wrapped to debut its "I Pledge to drive safe and sober" campaign.  The population of Newfoundland along the way was invited to sign the vehicle as a pledge to "to drive safe and sober".  This initiative was very well received and visitors were thrilled to sign the car.

"Kia Canada is proud of the success of team Designated Drivers at Targa Newfoundland" said Maria Soklis, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer (COO) Kia Canada Inc. "They did a remarkable job driving and promoting MADD Canada's quest to educate Canadians on the importance of driving responsibly".

"The Forte Koup performed admirably, enduring extreme driving conditions without skipping a beat" said driver Jacques Deshaies. "This is a true testament to Kia's the robust and well-engineered nature of the car", he added.

"Targa Newfoundland is truly demanding and takes realistic goals, focus, dedication and teamwork to make it to the finish line" said co-driver Shaun Keenan. He also added: "I'm so happy we were able to make it to the end for Kia Canada and MADD, and take home a Trophy Plate as a reminder of this incredible experience".

After competing in the Targa rally, the vehicle will tour the 2012 Canadian Auto Show circuit where it will be seen at Kia Canada's display.
