Former CBC Exec Anton Leo tapped to create new shows
MONTREAL, Feb. 16 /CNW Telbec/ - The Just For Laughs Group is proud to
announce the hiring of Anton Leo as Vice President, Television
Development and Production, effective March 1st. Anton comes to Just
For Laughs from CBC TV Comedy where he has been a Creative Head,
Production Executive and Executive Producer, a position which saw him
oversee the Just For Laughs TV series, amongst many others.
"The benefit of working with Anton so closely over the past few years is that
we've grown together and know each other intimately," said Andy Nulman, Just For Laughs Group President, Television and
Festivals. "Now with Anton on our side of the table, I'm looking forward to him
driving productions, ideas and people with the same type of vision,
insight and class he exhibited as a CBC exec."
Anton Leo's principal responsibilities will be to initiate and develop
new television shows for the Just For Laughs group, primarily in the
areas of scripted, reality, game and panel. "One of my main objectives will be to develop new ideas and shows as
well as acquire new properties. I will also supervise the development
process, financing and production of these new television shows," said Leo.
But that's not all. He will also develop and maintain relationships with
Canadian and US conventional, specialty, pay and IP broadcasters,
mobile service providers and web sites, as well as writers, comedians
and, artists. As the creative lead for the galas and specials produced
during the JFL Festivals, Anton will produce, recruit, hire and
supervise the creative and production staff. He will also advise and
participate in JFL's variety and stand-up development and production
for US, UK, Australia and international markets.
"I think we're getting our money's worth," added Nulman.
While at CBC, in addition to overseeing the Just For Laughs series,
Anton played a key role in bringing Canadian viewers home-grown comedy
series such as Little Mosque on the Prairie, The Ron James Show, 18 To
Life, Death Comes To Town, and The Tournament. "Anton has been the driving force behind comedy at CBC and is
responsible for many of the great shows that make millions of Canadians
laugh. Our longstanding partnership with Just for Laughs will only be
strengthened by Anton's move. We wish him the very best." said Kirstine Stewart, EVP English Services, CBC.
Prior to his diverse career at our national broadcaster, Anton managed a
radio station, a comedy club, performed sketch comedy across Canada and
garnered rave reviews for his role as "waiter with tray" in a series of
mid-70's beer commercials.
