VANCOUVER, June 14, 2011 /CNW/ - In celebration of Nature Play Day
Canada, taking place tomorrow across the country, ING DIRECT is
announcing funding for a community build at Grandview Earth School in
East Vancouver. The outdoor spaces of the school, home to 180 students,
will be revitalized with a natural playground and community gathering
spaces for the local residents.
Nature Play Day is an initiative of the Child and Nature Alliance, a
group of professionals, families and public sector employees dedicated
to connecting Canadian children with the natural world.
ING DIRECT will provide $100,000 towards the transformation of the
outdoor spaces around the school, matching funds raised by the school
and Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds. Bienenstock has created a
playground to incorporate elements of the Western Coast and reflect the
Earth School's themes of the forest and the ocean. The playground will
give students a taste of the ocean and coastal rainforest through its
design as an urban microsite of Pacific Rim National Park. The
transformation will take place on July 20, 2011 - all in one day.
The playground design will be unveiled tomorrow, June 15 at 11:30am at
Grandview School (2055 Woodland Drive, Vancouver, BC).
The local build will be the fourth national natural playground build
organized by ING DIRECT and Bienenstock as part of ING DIRECT's "Orange
in the Community" volunteer program. Since 2009, ING DIRECT and
Bienenstock have helped to build natural playgrounds and revitalize
community spaces at McCleary Park in downtown Toronto, an east end
Toronto Community housing complex, and at Fairlea Park in Ottawa.
The Vancouver community is invited to participate in the build on July
20, 2011 at Grandview Earth School. For more information or to sign

About Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds
Bienenstock Natural Playgrounds engages communities to re-imagine and
rebuild their public space through better designs, partnerships, and
programs that connect their children and adults to nature. The parks
and playgrounds we create reflect the natural heritage of the site and
the needs of the community through a collaborative and inclusive design
process, a skilled team of installers and well orchestrated community
builds. Rolling hills, curling pathways, and giant logs and boulders
and trees define spaces filled with art, music, and nature. These are
playgrounds without barriers where children and families are encouraged
to explore their imagination and this is the place in our community
where we form four critical bonds with nature and each other. Projects
can be found in public parks and at schools and child care centres
across Canada and the USA. For more information, please visit www.naturalplaygrounds.ca.
