TORONTO, May 19 /CNW/ -
Today, Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak announced that a PC government would
provide immediate relief for families and seniors facing rising energy
costs by removing the HST from home hydro and heating bills, and
removing the debt retirement charge from home hydro bills.
An Ontario PC government will provide Ontario families with real,
permanent household relief by:
Removing the HST from residential hydro bills. The HST has made life
unaffordable for many families. Combine that with expensive energy
experiments and hydro bills are soaring.
Removing the HST from residential home heating bills (natural gas and
other fuels). We live in Canada where heating our homes isn't a luxury.
Increasing the cost with a tax increase is unfair.
Removing the Debt Retirement Charge from residential hydro bills. We
will remove the so-called "Debt Retirement Charge" from your hydro
bills. The full amount had been collected as of 2010 - yet the
McGuinty government extended it to 2018.
Taken together, these three steps will give a typical Ontario household
$275 in immediate relief from rising energy bills.
"After talking to families, party members and our unprecedented 'Have
Your Say Ontario' survey, it's clear that people in Ontario want relief
from Dalton McGuinty's HST and skyrocketing hydro bills."
--Tim Hudak, Ontario PC Party Leader
"For eight years, billions of our energy dollars have been thrown away
through Dalton McGuinty's mismanagement and expensive experiments, and
the result is skyrocketing rates that are making it harder and harder
for families to pay their hydro bills. I will fight this unfair burden
and make energy more affordable for Ontario families."
--Tim Hudak, Ontario PC Leader
"I know that family budgets are stretched and it's a struggle to balance
work, family and the chequebook. Dalton McGuinty is out of touch, and
he's forgotten what it's like for families to cope. By eliminating the
HST and Debt Retirement Charge from hydro and home heating bills, an
Ontario PC government will put Ontario families first."
--Tim Hudak, Ontario PC Leader
Under Dalton McGuinty, hydro rates have increased eight times since 2003
by a total of 84 percent, or a whopping 150 percent for families with
activated smart meters.
Despite promising Ontario families that his expensive energy experiments
and Green Energy Act would only raise rates by 1 percent, Dalton
McGuinty now admits in last year's Fall Economic Update that bills will
rise by an additional 46 percent by 2015.
Even the Ontario Energy Board acknowledged Dalton McGuinty's energy
experiments were behind the latest May 1 hydro increase when they said
new forms of power generation (as a result of the Green Energy Act) are
costing more to produce.

CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY
Good morning and thank you for coming.
First I want to thank James and Margaret Black for welcoming us to their
home this morning.
I heard from them today what I've heard from families and seniors across
Ontario. Families are paying more and working harder, only to fall
further behind. Taxes, fees and hydro bills are skyrocketing, and
families are worse off, not better.
Today, I'm announcing the first step in the Ontario PC plan to give
families and seniors the relief they deserve.
The most unfair part of the HST tax hike is how it hits at all of life's
essentials - the things you can't do without, like the cost of hydro,
natural gas and home heating oil.
And that's on top of already sky rocketing hydro bills thanks to Dalton
McGuinty's unaffordable energy experiments. Dalton McGuinty has raised
hydro rates 84 percent since coming into office, and a whopping 150
percent for families with so-called smart meters.
While Ontario families struggle to raise their kids and balance their
chequebooks, they need to know their premier understands what they're
I believe that the people of Ontario who work hard and play by the rules
deserve to be dealt a fair hand from government.
I believe that the people who pay the bills should come first.
After talking to hundreds of families like the Blacks today, and after
our unprecedented "Have Your Say Ontario" survey, I understand that
people need relief from the hydro and home heating costs that have
risen so much under Dalton McGuinty.
And so today I am announcing that an Ontario PC government would provide
immediate relief for families, by removing the HST from home hydro and
heating bills, and removing the debt retirement charge on home hydro
First, we will eliminate the HST on hydro bills. The HST has made life
unaffordable for many families, particularly when hydro rates were
already soaring. We will remove the provincial portion of the HST from
Second, we will remove the HST from the cost of home heating. We live in
Canada where heating our homes isn't a luxury. Increasing the cost with
a tax increase is unfair.
We will remove the provincial portion of the HST from every home heating
bill, like natural gas, home heating oil and propane.
And third, we will remove the so-called "Debt Retirement Charge" from
hydro bills. The full amount of the debt this charge was supposed to
retire was collected by 2010 - yet the McGuinty government extended it
to 2018. We will remove it from residential hydro bills.
Together, these three steps will provide a typical Ontario family with
$275 in immediate relief from on your energy bills.
This is the first step in our Ontario PC plan to fight the unfair
Liberal tax burden and give much-needed relief to Ontario families and
This October, the people of Ontario have a clear choice. We can choose
another Dalton McGuinty Liberal government that will keep hiking taxes
and raising hydro rates, or we can choose a Tim Hudak PC government
that gives families and seniors the relief and respect they deserve.
