Slower Than Normal Demand This Season Leads to Major Discounts at Top
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 22, 2011 /CNW/ -- Hotwire.com®, a leading discount travel site, today announced the results of the November 2011 Hotwire® Canadian Hotel Rate Report, which features the top five cities in Canada where hotel rates have dropped the most. This month, hotels in many popular cities are reporting softer demand versus last year, resulting in falling prices. When combined with Hotwire's already discounted prices, the Hotel Rate Report helps guide customers to the destinations that can maximize their travel dollars.
Taking first place on the list for the second month in a row is Banff, which maintained its claim as a value destination throughout 2011. Boasting a 14 percent price drop in November, Banff offers some of Canada's best outdoor activities, including hiking, biking and natural hot springs. It's also a great destination for winter sports enthusiasts, with plenty of opportunity for skiing and snowboarding.
Vancouver makes a welcome return this month at third place with an eight percent decrease. This city is experiencing a softer than normal shoulder season and as a result hotels are keeping rates low. Part of the reason for the drop in demand is high gas prices, which are affecting drive visitors from the surrounding areas. Prices should stay low up until the Grey Cup begins at the end of the month, when tourist traffic is expected to rise.
Calgary, Niagara Falls and Montreal all continue to pop up on the list. These cities are also experiencing less demand this season primarily driven by the exchange rate curbing traffic. Additionally, hotels in Calgary and Montreal have to drop rates even lower due to increased pricing competition among several new hotels coming online. With 11 and six percent decreases, respectively, Calgary, Montreal and Niagara Falls are offering travellers fantastic deals in order to get visitors into their city limits.
When compared to the same time last year, the top five hotel price reductions for October 2011 include:

"It's an ideal time for domestic and international travellers alike to visit some of Canada's biggest cities, as low prices continue throughout shoulder season," said Clem Bason, president of the Hotwire Group. "With winter sports season just around the corner, we're not expecting rates like these to last forever, but consumers will always be able to find steeply discounted deals on Hotwire."
Hotwire is able to find great deals because it works with hotels, airlines and car rental companies to fill unsold inventory. This means customers can find incredibly low deals on Hotwire, especially in cities like those on the Hotel Rate Report where prices are unseasonably low.
About the Hotwire Hotel Rate Report
The Hotwire Hotel Rate Report will run results during the first week of each month. Results are calculated by looking at Hotwire stay dates for select regions in the current month, and comparing prices in the current month against Hotwire prices in the same month in the prior year. Prices are compared within the same star rating categories for consistency, and the percent change in price for each region is generated as an overall average of the changes in those categories. The prices in the chart above are examples for a particular star rating category within that market, and actual prices may be higher or lower than the example that is provided.
