Whistler, British Columbia appears on list of top price drops for the
first
    time since 2009

SAN FRANCISCO, Feb. 17, 2011 /CNW/ -- Hotwire.com®, a leading discount travel site, today announced the results of the February 2011 Hotwire® Canadian Hotel Rate Report, which features the top five cities in Canada where hotel rates have dropped the most. When combined with Hotwire's already discounted prices, the Hotel Rate Report helps guide customers to the destinations that can maximize their travel dollars. For the most part, 2010 was a bargain-traveler's dream, but prices at a number of popular destinations continue to go even lower in 2011.

Whistler, British Columbia appears for the first time since the debut of the Canadian Rate Report in August 2009. Consistently ranked the number one resort in North America, and featuring two majestic mountains prime for skiing and snowboarding, Whistler's five percent price drop entices travelers to come to town to play hard and rest easy. Visitors to the area can also enjoy wining and dining, exploring the arts, shopping, or just communing with nature. Now is a particularly great time to take advantage of the deals in Whistler because this weekend kicks off the one-year anniversary of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, part of a month-long Whistler Winter Arts Festival for family fun and excitement.

As extreme winter conditions across North America continue to stall tourism in many areas, hoteliers in Canada continue to drop rates in the hope of attracting travelers deterred by the storms. Banff, Alberta tops this month's list with a whopping 19 percent decrease - the steepest drop in hotel rates in Canada in the past five months. For those looking for reliable snow and a relatively long winter recreation season, Banff is an ideal destination for its athletic activities, rich Canadian history and a diverse calibre of performing arts and entertainment attractions.

Hotwire is able to find great deals because it works with hotels, airlines and car rental companies to fill unsold inventory. This means customers will find incredibly low deals on Hotwire, especially in cities like those on the Hotel Rate Report where prices are unseasonably low.

When compared to the same time last year, the top five hotel price reductions for February 2011 include:

"These price drops come right at the height of the winter recreation season," said Clem Bason, President of the Hotwire Group. "Whether you want to sit by the fire and take in the snowy surroundings from the warmth of your hotel room or suit up for some skiing, Canada beckons all travelers with its enticing winter deals."

About the Hotwire Hotel Rate Report

    >>

The Hotwire Hotel Rate Report will run results during the first week of each month. Results are calculated by looking at Hotwire stay dates for select regions in the current month, and comparing prices in the current month against Hotwire prices in the same month in the prior year. Prices are compared within the same star rating categories for consistency, and the percent change in price for each region is generated as an overall average of the changes in those categories. The prices in the chart above are examples for a particular star rating category within that market, and actual prices may be higher or lower than the example that is provided.
