Home Selling & Buying Season in Full Bloom; Canadians tired of being snowed

74 per cent of home owners say commissions too hefty; 79 per cent say time for a change

TORONTO, April 13 /CNW/ - More than the seasons may be changing in the real estate market this spring as an overwhelming majority of Canadian home owners (74 per cent) say real estate commissions are too high and two-thirds (64 per cent) are open to considering an alternative to a high-fee real estate agent to sell their home, according to a new national Harris-Decima poll commissioned by PropertyGuys.com.

"This spring, Canadians don't want to get snowed," says Ken LeBlanc, President of PropertyGuys.com, Canada's fastest growing private sale franchise network. "Today's poll clearly shows that Canadians are tired of shelling out up to five per cent of the value of their home for commissions to a high-fee agent."

Spring is the busiest time of the year for the real estate market. It's also the time that high-fee real estate agents make most of their money. One difference, however, this will be the first Spring season since a recent settlement between the national association representing real estate agents and the Competition Bureau clarified that mere postings on a Boards MLS® Systems are acceptable.

"Every year more and more Canadians are opting to sell without a high-fee agent," says Walter Melanson, Director of Partnerships with PropertyGuys.com. "In the past 12 years we've helped more than 40,700 sellers and buyers connect online, saving them more than $300 million that they would have otherwise paid in commissions. We believe that the Competition Bureau's actions will only help bring about a transformation in how Canadians sell their homes."

Time for technology to take over
The poll also revealed that 79 per cent of Canadian home owners believe the time has come to allow new technologies to change the way they sell their home.

"High-fee real estate agents are a relic of a different world, a different economic reality and a different home owner," says Melanson. "In a networked world, where eBay is replacing newspaper classifieds, Expedia is replacing travel agents, and Netflix is replacing the video store, PropertyGuys.com is replacing the high-fee real estate agents model. The PropertyGuys.com poll was conducted from March 31st to April 3rd, 2011 by Harris/Decima via teleVox, the company's national telephone omnibus.  A total of 1,002 Canadians were surveyed, of which 762 own their home.  Results for this subgroup are accurate to within +/- 3.6 per cent 19 times out of 20.
