Heavy traffic going to Montreal this weekend - Major roadwork on Champlain Bridge towards Montreal and night closures of the Bonaventure Expressway and Honoré-Mercier Bridge

LONGUEUIL, QC, June 2, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) wishes to remind motorists that major roadwork will be taking place on the Champlain Bridge this weekend from Friday, June 3 at 10 PM to Monday, June 6 at 5 AM, as announced, to completely replace the expansion joints. During this period, only one lane will be open towards Montreal and two lanes towards the South Shore, for the entire weekend, both day and night.

CHAMPLAIN BRIDGE - SET-UP OF THE CONSTRUCTION SITE
Please note that the set-up for this closure will necessitate closure of one of three lanes starting at 9 PM, Friday, June 3 and closure of two of three lanes in both directions from 10 PM to 2 AM in order to set up the construction site for the whole weekend. There will therefore only be one lane open in each direction from 10 PM, Friday, June 3 to 2 AM, Saturday, June 4. Subsequently a "two lanes towards the South Shore, one lane towards Montreal" configuration will be in place until Monday at 5 AM.

CHAMPLAIN BRIDGE - REDUCING THE IMPACT
This major roadwork will have a considerable impact on traffic. Therefore, during this period, it is highly recommended that motorists avoid the Champlain Bridge and use the Jacques-Cartier Bridge, the Victoria Bridge and even the Honoré-Mercier Bridge.

Please also note that the Victoria Bridge will continue with its usual configuration for the entire weekend, as the complete closure of the bridge towards the South Shore would create important inconveniences for motorists, as was effected two weeks ago. As well, the Tour de l'Île de Montréal will occasion the closure of Wellington Street at the Victoria Bridge on Sunday, June 5 from 9:35 AM to 4:15 PM, which will further complicate traffic in this sector.

Three lanes of the Jacques-Cartier Bridge will be kept open to traffic in one direction or the other as traffic conditions warrant and provide a good alternative for motorists. However, it should also be noted that current road work by the City of Montreal on Sherbrooke St. may also complicate traffic at the entry to Montreal over the course of the weekend.

It should be noted that, at 3.3 metres wide, the northbound traffic lane on the Champlain Bridge will be narrower than usual. Trucks exceeding the permissible width must avoid the Champlain Bridge northbound.

ROADWORK AT NIGHT ON BONAVENTURE EXPRESSWAY AND HONORÉ-MERCIER BRIDGE
We would also wish to announce overnight roadwork on the Bonaventure Expressway in the Pierre- Dupuy Avenue sector (Exit 2 of the Bonaventure Expressway), in order to continue the repair work begun in May.

The work will necessitate complete closure of this section of the Bonaventure Expressway from Friday at 11 PM to Saturday at 9 AM and from Saturday at midnight until Sunday at 9 AM. A Detour route have been planned by the exit 2 and then by the service road. We invite you to consult our map (http://bit.ly/bplZzT), which presents the various closure scenarios. In this case, it is a Type C closure.

Finally, please remember that roadwork will take place on the Honoré-Mercier Bridge on Friday night at 10 PM until Saturday at 10 AM, and that only one lane will be open in each direction during this period. The Honoré-Mercier Bridge will be a viable option subsequently and for the remainder of the weekend.

CHAMPLAIN BRIDGE - UPCOMING SCHEDULE
Finally, please note that no major closures will occur on the Champlain Bridge and Bonaventure Expressway during the Canadian Grand Prix weekend. Roadwork will continue subsequently on the Champlain Bridge towards the South Shore (1 lane open to the South Shore and 2 lanes open towards Montreal) from Friday, June 17 at 10 PM to Monday, June 20 at 5 AM to complete the roadwork on the expansion joints scheduled for this year and postponed last weekend. It is important to note that during the month of July, we will avoid major closings of the bridge, but that work will nevertheless continue underneath the structure, either on the pillars, concrete beams or bridge pier cap.

Subsequently, major closures will resume in August in order to complete paving and in September on Highway 15. To find out more about the complete upcoming schedule for spring and summer, please consult the following link: http://bit.ly/ijDiMk.

Every effort has been made to complete this roadwork as quickly and efficiently as possible. Please also note that the roadwork may be rescheduled due to unfavourable weather conditions.
