TORONTO, April 18 /CNW/ - CivicAction's Greening Greater Toronto is thrilled to accept the City of Toronto's Green Toronto Award for Leadership. This award recognizes the leadership of more than 1,000
people who have volunteered their wisdom and resources to Greening
Greater Toronto's work since it launched three years ago.
The Leadership award, generously sponsored by the Toronto Community
Foundation, is presented to an individual, organization, or company
that has gone above and beyond in helping transform the city's
environment. Greening Greater Toronto received the award in
recognition of its work to overcome the barriers to environmental
progress in the Toronto region.
The award celebrates Greening Greater Toronto's portfolio of four key
projects: the Commercial Building Energy Initiative, bringing office building landlords and tenants together in a unique
collaboration to reduce office energy use; the Green Procurement initiative, which aims to leverage purchasing decisions to reduce
organizations' environmental impact; the Greening Canada Fund that supports communities and the environment by helping Canadian
corporations invest in local energy efficiency and renewable energy
projects that produce carbon offset credits; and the recently launched Living City Report Card, the most in-depth analysis of the environment and the activities that
drive environmental health of any Canadian city region. Developed in
partnership with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, the Report
Card raises awareness of what organizations, governments and residents
need to do to improve the region's environmental performance.
"We so appreciate this recognition of our role in helping transform the
way we build and sustain our region," said Linda Weichel, Managing
Director of Greening Greater Toronto. "We'd like to thank the judges,
the award sponsor, Toronto Community Foundation, our voluntary leaders
who serve as our co-chairs and our more than 200 partners across the
region. Their collaboration and commitment reflects the true spirit of
leadership, and has directly contributed to the success of our work."
This leadership will continue to inform Greening Greater Toronto's work
as it develops its priorities for future action based on research,
consultation and discussion at CivicAction's recent Greater Toronto Summit 2011.
The City's environmental awards of excellence recognize the individuals,
organizations and companies helping to lead the way to a cleaner,
greener and more liveable Toronto. The awards were presented at the
seventh annual Green Toronto Awards ceremony, held at the Green Living
Show at Exhibition Place on April 15. Read the City of Toronto's
