Government of Canada helps people with disabilities in Lac-St-Jean Region access job market

DOLBEAU-MISTASSINI, QC, Nov. 17, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - The Government of Canada is investing in a project that will provide opportunities in the job market for people with disabilities.

The Honourable Denis Lebel, Minister of Transport, Infrastructure and Communities and Minister of the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Quebec, on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development today announced that Service externe de main-d'œuvre Saguenay - Lac-St-Jean is receiving federal support to raise awareness among employers of people with disabilities' potential to contribute to the workforce.

"In today's environment, it is more important than ever that all Canadians have the skills they need to participate and succeed in the job market," said Minister Lebel. "By supporting this project, our government is helping Canadians with disabilities maximize their potential and independence."

Service externe de main-d'œuvre Saguenay - Lac-St-Jean is receiving $18,200 from the federal Opportunities Fund which helps people with disabilities prepare for, obtain and maintain employment or self-employment.

The Awareness Local Component of the Opportunities Fund is designed to help communities and employers realize the potential of people with disabilities and the extent to which they are capable of contributing actively to the labour force. The Awareness campaign also aims to provide people with disabilities with all the current tools to access employment opportunities and resources, thereby enabling them to overcome barriers and gain access to the job market.

The Opportunities Fund is part of the Government of Canada's strategy aimed at building the most educated, skilled and flexible workforce in the world. The government highlighted its commitment to this strategy in Canada's Economic Action Plan. One of the key elements of the Plan is increasing and improving opportunities available to Canadian workers through skills development.
