Register Your Team Today for The Relay to End Kids Cancer
TORONTO, April 13 /CNW/ - Sears Canada Inc. is calling on all Canadians to lace up for a new challenge this summer. Registration is open and ready to go for Sears Great Canadian Run, a one-day, long-distance running relay in support of paediatric cancer care and research.
Teams of three to six are invited to participate in this relay event that unites Canadians in the fight against childhood cancer, with runners enjoying scenic courses in British Columbia, Ontario and Quebec: Squamish to Whistler on August 27; Toronto to Collingwood/Blue Mountain on September 24; and Ottawa to Montebello on October 15. Relay distances for each event vary and offer multiple exchange points so that teams can manage their own strategy for completing the course. The course from Woodbine Shopping Centre in Toronto to The Village at Blue Mountain is a 141 kilometre distance and runners can take turns throughout the day for lengths of three to 12 kms at a time.
"Sears Canada is focused on the fight against childhood cancer," said Dene Rogers, President and CEO, Sears Canada Inc. "The Sears Great Canadian Run gives Canadians across the country - runners and non-runners alike - a great reason to team up for a cause that affects thousands of children and families every single day. The Sears Great Canadian Run is a way for Canadians to support families going through the most challenging of times."
The Sears Great Canadian Run will raise funds for Sears Canada Charitable Foundation, and half of the donation made by the Foundation will benefit local paediatric oncology hospitals and organizations in the cities where the Run takes place and the remainder will benefit national paediatric cancer research initiatives, such as The Sears Childhood Cancer Fellowship at The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids). For the Sears Great Canadian Run in Toronto on September 24, 2011, proceeds will go to initiatives in the haematology/oncology program at SickKids.
"We are grateful to Sears Canada and to the hundreds of individuals in the community who will participate in this event series to help raise critical funds in the fight against childhood cancer," says Ted Garrard, President and CEO, SickKids Foundation. "Your collective efforts make a difference and give hope and inspiration to the affected children and families."
The relay is part of The Sears Great Canadian Event series, which, in addition to the Run, includes the Sears Great Canadian Chill, a traditional "polar bear" dip event that saw hundreds of "Chillers" brave the icy waters of Lake Ontario at Ashbridge's Bay in Toronto and Britannia Beach in Ottawa on New Year's Day 2011. Through these community events, Sears is helping to bring awareness to and raise critical funds for paediatric cancer care and research, with the ultimate aim of helping children with cancer live longer, more fulfilling lives.
Start a team today and help bring childhood cancer to the finish. Registration for the Sears Great Canadian Run is open. To make a donation, to register a team or to volunteer, please visit www.TheSearsGreatCanadianRun.ca.
