TORONTO, Feb. 3 /CNW/ - Globalive applauds the Federal Government's
support of Canadian consumers with its stand against the CRTC's recent
decision allowing Bell Canada to impose usage based billing ("UBB") on
independent Internet service providers ("ISPs").
The CRTC ruling would have stifled competition in the Internet market by
forcing ISPs to charge their customers on a usage basis, eliminating
unlimited Internet services like those provided under Globalive's Yak
"Globalive has always been an advocate for the consumer and for fair
competition so we're very pleased that the Government is stepping in to
ensure that competition survives in the Internet market," said Anthony
Lacavera, Chairman of Globalive. "Canadians have told us they want
access to fair-priced, unlimited telecom services, which we offer
through both Yak and WIND Mobile. Correcting this CRTC decision,
whether by Cabinet or the CRTC itself, means Yak can continue giving
Canadians what they want."
Unlike Yak and other ISPs, Bell Canada has been charging many of its
customers using UBB for years. Since Bell Canada first sought to
impose these billing practices on Yak's customers two years ago,
Globalive has been fighting hard to preserve this important competitive
alternative to Bell Canada's offerings.
"Canadians want to have access to everything that technology has to
offer at a reasonable price, and we wholeheartedly believe they deserve
that, which is why we do our best to provide it. Globalive will not
stand for gouging Canadians and we applaud the Government for
supporting that. This is a big victory for Canadian consumers!"
