Exceptional BC students receive Coast Capital Savings Education Awards

SURREY, BC, Sept. 20, 2011 /CNW/ - 48 students from across the province started the new school year with accolades as Coast Capital Savings handed out their annual Education Awards. In total, the credit union handed out $144,000 to students who have shown exemplary efforts in community leadership, academic success and the ability to overcome hardship to succeed.

This year students from several B.C. communities including Victoria, Nanaimo, Duncan Abbotsford, Burnaby, Surrey, Vancouver, Richmond, Coquitlam, Delta, Langley and Kelowna were recognized with awards, which include the Citizenship Award valued at $2,000 and the Standing Tall Award worth $5,000. Coast Capital also fosters student leadership through internships on its Youth Team and significant partnerships with non-profit organizations dedicated to education, youth and community involvement.

Amandeep Parhar from Nanaimo received a Coast Capital Savings Citizenship Award for his commitment to mentoring younger students within his school through a program he created called After Hours.

"I can't express how thankful I am to have been recognized in this way by Coast Capital Savings," said Amandeep, who is currently enrolled at The University of British Columbia (UBC) where he will be pursuing his Bachelor of Science degree with a longer term goal of attending medical school. "I feel that I have a responsibility to give back to the community that has given me so much. To be acknowledged for that work is really a cherry on top."

Jennifer Andrews of Kelowna received a Standing Tall Award for her outstanding academic performance and determination to overcome her physical challenges, "I will continue to find ways to achieve my goals regardless of my physical limitations," says Jennifer, who is now enrolled at Okanagan College pursuing her Business Administration Degree. "Whether it is academic or volunteerism, I get great fulfillment out of being a busy, contributing community member. I am happy that Coast Capital shares my values and acknowledges them through their Education Awards program."

Wendy Lachance, Director, Community Leadership, Coast Capital Savings, said the credit union received more than 1000 applications this year from across B.C.
