EQAO Profiles Secondary Schools for Their Commitment to Using Data to Improve Student Learning

TORONTO, June 15, 2011 /CNW/ - Today the Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) released school- and board-level results from the 2010-2011 Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). As part of this public reporting, EQAO is once again presenting profiles of schools that are notable for their success at raising their students' literacy skills, as demonstrated by improved OSSLT scores over the years. The three English-language schools being profiled this year are Arnprior District High School in Arnprior, Eastdale Collegiate and Vocational Institute in Oshawa and Riverdale Collegiate Institute in Toronto.

These schools are at various stages in their own journey of learning and are just a few of the many dedicated schools that can be found right across Ontario. They are notable for their leadership, data-driven strategies and whole-school approaches to helping each student succeed. Based on unique circumstances, each one of these schools has adopted an action plan to work toward improved student outcomes using provincial assessment results as a guide.

"EQAO results allow school communities to celebrate their successes and identify students in need of support," said Marguerite Jackson, EQAO's Chief Executive Officer. "Used in conjunction with other classroom and board data, EQAO results help complete the picture of student learning and have, over the years, become a catalyst for improved student achievement and an essential tool that educators across the province rely on."

Staff members at these schools have discussed what the results of EQAO's testing and other data have taught them about their students, and the innovative approaches they are using to address their students' needs.

  • Arnprior District High School, Arnprior
"EQAO data either reaffirms what you have been doing or makes you rethink what you have to do, what direction you have to take."
    Neil Farmer, principal

  • Eastdale Collegiate and Vocational Institute, Oshawa
"Using EQAO and other assessment data helps our staff to increase student achievement. The data enable us to identify the literacy learning gaps so that we can develop programs and strategies across the curriculum to target these gaps and then measure our progress in closing the gaps for our students. However, as powerful as data is, the 'magic' happens in our school when students are inspired by the strong bonds formed through individualized attention from caring teachers."
    Mary Shea, principal

  • Riverdale Collegiate Institute, Toronto
"We can use the EQAO OSSLT data to find gaps that we can remediate, but we must not overlook our successes. We must look at what we are doing well. We have teachers that are doing remarkable things in reasonable and doable ways, and we can take the techniques and strategies that they are using and apply them in other subject areas."
    —Kenn Harvey, principal

The full school stories as well as those of other previously profiled schools can be found at www.eqao.com.

The proactive identification of students in need of additional support, the alignment and integration of literacy-focused curricula at the elementary and the secondary levels and a literacy focus in all subject areas are just some of the strategies that schools across Ontario are using to ensure the success of their students.

The provincial news release "Ontario Schools and School Boards Get Their Results from the 2011 Literacy Test" and a backgrounder are also available.

Results for all publicly funded secondary schools and their school boards are available at www.eqao.com.
