Creating Jobs For Sudbury

Ontario Liberal Plan To Deliver Jobs And Growth For Northern Ontario

SUDBURY, ON, Sept. 15, 2011 /CNW/ - The Ontario Liberal Plan will deliver real, measurable progress and jobs for Northern Ontario families, Premier Dalton McGuinty said today at a rally with Sudbury-area Liberals.

"All Ontario families benefit from a strong Northern economy," said McGuinty.  "We've invested heavily in Northern highways, hospitals, and wastewater systems that not only support thousands of jobs, but prepare the North for future growth.  Our Ontario Liberal Plan builds on that and will deliver jobs and growth for the North."

Together with Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing Rick Bartolucci and Tony Ryma, the Ontario Liberal candidate for Nickel Belt, McGuinty discussed the Ontario Liberal Plan for Northern Ontario, entitled, "Forward. Together.", which will help Northern Ontario families meet the challenges we face as we emerge from the global recession.

Some of the key elements of the plan for Northern Ontario include:

  • Creating Jobs — by driving the development in the Ring of Fire;
  • Protecting Thousands of Jobs — by making the Northern Industrial Electricity Rate Program permanent;
  • Supporting Northern Jobs — by increasing the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund to $110 million and increasing the number of jobs created to 4,000 a year; and
  • Opening New Mines — at least eight in the next 10 years.

Ontario Liberals are also investing in Northern education — Ontario is now building the country's first architecture school in forty years at Laurentian University.

"These are uncertain times for the global economy.  These are challenging times for our families.  This is our plan to help.  This is our way forward, together," McGuinty said.

The Hudak PCs' record is disastrous.  When Tim Hudak was Northern Development Minister in the last PC government, he helped the PCs download $3 billion onto cities and towns, triggering property tax hikes and massive cuts to public services.

"The Hudak PCs have a $14 billion hole in their platform — that means deep cuts that will put our economy, education and health care at risk," McGuinty said.  "The Horwath NDP would introduce a crushing $9 billion in job-killing taxes.  The NDP would also impose a moratorium on development north of 51, which would kill the Ring of Fire and destroy jobs in every Northern community, and their mining pledge would kill hundreds of jobs in Sudbury alone.  Both would take Ontario off track at the worst time.  Only Ontario Liberals have the strong plan that will help Northern Ontario families compete in the global economy.  I'm going to fight hard for that plan to keep us moving forward, together."
