TORONTO, May 18 /CNW/ - On behalf of PACT, the Professional Association
of Canadian Theatres, President Eric Coates congratulates the Honorable
James Moore on his reappointment as Minister of Canadian Heritage.
Since his appointment in 2008, Minister Moore has been a strong advocate
for Canada's cultural sector. He recognizes the important place that
the arts and cultural industries play in Canada's economy and has
worked to ensure they are part of the Government's broader economic
strategy. "Minister Moore has travelled the country meeting with
artists and arts organizations, including many PACT members. He
appreciates and values the contribution the arts make to our country,"
said Coates. "We are confident that PACT's members will be well-served
by Minister Moore's ongoing work on our behalf."
PACT looks forward to ongoing work with Minister Moore and the
Government of Canada to continue efforts to strengthen Canada's theatre
sector, and the arts in general. As part of the Canadian Arts
Coalition, PACT is working towards long-term increased investment in
the Canada Council for the Arts and measures to help theatre companies
and arts organizations increase their market access, with a particular
focus on international opportunities.
Canadians enjoy a rich array of theatre across the country. From the
largest summer theatre festivals that draw thousands of tourists each
year to regional and local theatre companies that enrich the lives of
their communities, coast to coast to coast, our country benefits from a
lively theatre sector. PACT's 138 members offered 597 plays to
Canadians last year. One in two Canadians attends at least one live
performing arts event a year.
The Professional Association of Canadian Theatres is a member-driven
organization that serves as the collective voice of professional
Canadian theatres. For the betterment of Canadian theatre, PACT
provides leadership, national representation and a variety of programs
and practical assistance to member companies, enabling members to do
their own creative work.
PACT is a founding member of the Performing Arts Alliance and the
Canadian Arts Coalition and works in tandem with other representative
bodies in the cultural and not-for-profit sector including the Canadian
Arts Summit and others.
