TORONTO, Sept. 1, 2011 /CNW/ - College students were informed last night
that the College Employers Council and the Ontario Public Service
Employees Union (OPSEU) did not come to an agreement, and that the
support staff will go on strike effective immediately. Colleges will
remain open and classes will resume, however over 100 positions will be
affected resulting in diminished services for students starting their
"We urge both parties to come to an agreement and to understand the
effects this strike will have on all college students across Ontario,"
says Brian Costantini, College Student Alliance (CSA) President. He
adds, "This strike puts the availability and quality of support
services in jeopardy for all Ontario college students at a time when
they are most needed."
Colleges offered the support staff a 4.8% salary increase over 3 years.
Other items the colleges included in their proposal were compressed
work weeks, special allowances, and special work weeks. However, OPSEU
remains concerned that these items and others do not represent a fair
settlement to end negotiations.
"Students will be affected in numerous ways - from financial aid,
registration, student support, and IT services to name a few," says Jim
Robeson, Director of Advocacy for the CSA. "This strike is not just
about the future of the support staff and the colleges, but also about
the futures of our college students that will be on our Ontario
