College students want an agreement

TORONTO, Sept. 1, 2011 /CNW/ - College students were informed last night that the College Employers Council and the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) did not come to an agreement, and that the support staff will go on strike effective immediately. Colleges will remain open and classes will resume, however over 100 positions will be affected resulting in diminished services for students starting their 2011-12 year.

"We urge both parties to come to an agreement and to understand the effects this strike will have on all college students across Ontario," says Brian Costantini, College Student Alliance (CSA) President. He adds, "This strike puts the availability and quality of support services in jeopardy for all Ontario college students at a time when they are most needed."

Colleges offered the support staff a 4.8% salary increase over 3 years. Other items the colleges included in their proposal were compressed work weeks, special allowances, and special work weeks.  However, OPSEU remains concerned that these items and others do not represent a fair settlement to end negotiations.

"Students will be affected in numerous ways - from financial aid, registration, student support, and IT services to name a few," says Jim Robeson, Director of Advocacy for the CSA. "This strike is not just about the future of the support staff and the colleges, but also about the futures of our college students that will be on our Ontario campuses."

The CSA is keeping their member student associations (SA) up to date on the strike and encourages all college and college-university students to go to their SA offices for campus specific information. Updates can be found on the CSA web site at www.collegestudentalliance.ca.

The College Student Alliance (CSA) is an advocacy organization, which has been proudly serving Ontario's college and college-university students since 1975. The CSA currently represents 15 colleges and 23 member councils with over 130,000 full-time student members throughout the province.
