Champlain Bridge corridor: roadwork this weekend confirmed- traffic congestion expected

LONGUEUIL, Qc, Sept. 9, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated (JCCBI) wishes to confirm that paving work on the Champlain Bridge and roadwork on Highway 15 will take place this weekend, given the favourable weather conditions that are predicted. The combined road obstructions on both the Champlain Bridge and Highway 15 will allow for the maximization of work on a same axis and take place during the same period. However, traffic will be more difficult during this period and motorists are asked to avoid the Champlain Bridge corridor and to opt for the Jacques-Cartier and Victoria Bridges instead.

As of Friday, September 9 at 10 PM to Monday, September 12 at 5 AM, a single Montreal bound lane and two South Shore bound lanes will be open on the Champlain Bridge, whereas on Highway 15, a single lane will be open in each direction between the Atwater and Nuns' Island exits. Access to the South Shore will be made quicker by the Bonaventure Expressway since it enables motorists to avoid the Highway 15 worksite during this period.

Please also note that the work on Highway 15 will require the closure of ramp P3 (entrance for Highway 15 South by Gaétan-Laberge Boulevard in Verdun) and ramp O (entrance for Highway 15 South by exit 4 of the Bonaventure Expressway) during this period.

For all details concerning the setting up of the worksite in the night of Friday to Saturday and the modified work schedule for the next several weekends, we invite you to visit our blog at www.champlainbridge.ca.

Let us remind you that the work that is taking place underneath the bridge will continue over the next several weeks until the beginning of winter. Since February, nearly 75 to 125 workers have been working underneath the bridge every week, and this, without requiring any lane closures. These workers are continuing with the repair work on the beams, pillars and bridge pier caps, which is part of the 10 year-major maintenance program launched in 2009.

REDUCING THE IMPACT

During these closures, we recommend that motorists use the Jacques Cartier or Victoria Bridges. The Jacques Cartier Bridge will also be able to open three lanes in one direction or the other depending on traffic. However, please note that the Victoria Bridge will keep its usual configuration for next weekends, namely one lane in each direction.

With the partial and temporary closure of half of the Honoré-Mercier Bridge on weekend, this repair work will have a considerable impact on traffic over weekends. Mass transit, carpooling and public transport are strongly recommended during this period.
