CFIB applauds Ontario for designating 2011 Year of the Entrepreneur

TORONTO, May 31, 2011 /CNW/ - Today, the Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) and the Canadian Youth Business Foundation (CYBF) joined the Honourable Sandra Pupatello, minister of economic development and trade at Queen's Park to designate 2011 the Year of the Entrepreneur in Ontario. This declaration coincides with CFIB's 40th anniversary and the 15th anniversary of CYBF.

"What a way to celebrate 40 years of being the BIG VOICE for Small Business," said CFIB president Catherine Swift. "We applaud the Ontario Government for acknowledging the blood, sweat and tears that small businesses have invested in building a stronger Ontario."

Earlier this year, the Government of Canada adopted a joint recommendation by the CFIB and the CYBF to make the declaration nation-wide. With small businesses accounting for 97 per cent of all business in Ontario, and employing nearly half the provincial workforce, both groups wrote to Premier Dalton McGuinty to encourage a similar proclamation in Ontario.

"We hope this announcement pushes entrepreneurship to the forefront of the upcoming provincial election," said CFIB's Ontario vice-president Satinder Chera. Adding, "The Year of the Entrepreneur is a great opportunity for all parties to spell out their plan to help small businesses do what they do best - create jobs and grow the economy".

To highlight the Year of the Entrepreneur and to commemorate CFIB's 40th anniversary, the Federation is publishing mini reports on entrepreneurship throughout 2011. The series entitled, Insight on Entrepreneurship, is based on responses from thousands of small and medium-sized business across Canada and is available at www.cfib.ca

As Canada's largest association of small- and medium-sized businesses, CFIB is Powered by Entrepreneurs™. Established in 1971, CFIB takes direction from more than 108,000 members in every sector nationwide, giving independent business a strong and influential voice at all levels of government and helping to grow the economy. www.cfib-fcei.ca.
