WOODSTOCK, NB, Feb. 1 /CNW/ - Two months after announcing its commitment
to deliver 4G broadband across Canada, Barrett Xplore Inc. has
delivered. Barrett Xplore Inc. under the Xplornet brand, has activated
its 4G wireless network in Quebec, in the 8,500 square kilometre area
from Bas St. Laurent to the New Brunswick border. Customers in Quebec
are now experiencing all the Internet has to offer with broadband
connections that are truly high-speed and truly affordable.
In October 2010, Barrett Xplore Inc. boldly announced that it would
create Canada's first national 4G network by leveraging its hybrid
terrestrial and satellite network. The terrestrial wireless network,
which will comprise about 1200 towers, will be capable of speeds of 40
Mbps improving to over 100 Mbps by next year. While speed is
important, the key to a great experience is bandwidth, and the new
network will provide customers 3x - 10x more than today's 3G
HSPA-enabled packages. The terrestrial wireless technology will
complement the two new 4G High-Throughput Satellites (HTS), starting
with the launch of Viasat-1 in 2011, followed by a second -
Hughes-Jupiter - in early 2012.
Commenting on the success of this first stage of the 4G build, CEO John
Maduri credited the Barrett Xplore Inc. team, "It took the effort and
talent of the best telecom team in Canada to execute this rapidly.
We're proud because this represents a revitalization of rural Canada
and a leap forward for Canadian competitiveness."
"Our Conservative Government is pleased to support Barrett Xplore Inc.
in creating the first ever 4G network in Canada," said the Honourable
Tony Clement, Minister of Industry. "Through Canada's Economic Action
Plan and the Connecting Rural Canadian Program we are providing new
economic opportunities to northern and rural communities. Our
government is committed to working with industry partners, like Barrett
Xplore Inc., to expand access to broadband internet service and to
create lasting economic benefits in these regions."
Testimonials from the new 4G customers are arriving; this one from
Françis B. of Saint-Alexandre de Kamouraska, a new Xplornet subscriber:
"Reception is exceptional and very reliable. The new service makes a
tremendous difference. As the owner of a dairy farm, I now have the
means to better manage my company and in that respect, I'm more than
Barrett Xplore Inc. will continue to deploy the new network across
Canada and expects to have 4G service available everywhere in Canada
before the end of 2012.
