"Anyone can do yoga" to raise money for cutting edge arthritis research
TORONTO, Feb. 1 /CNW/ - On Sunday February 27, 2011 thousands of
Canadians will be bending and stretching in Power of Movement 2011, Canada's largest yoga challenge in support of arthritis and
autoimmune research. Since its inception in 2005, Power of Movement has
raised over $700,000 for critical arthritis research and engaged
thousands of Canadians in a celebration of movement.
"Our goal for Power of Movement 2011 is to top the one million dollar
mark for research into these diseases which affect more than 4.2
million Canadians," says David Prowten, Executive Director of the
Arthritis & Autoimmunity Research Centre Foundation, the organization
behind Power of Movement. "Power of Movement gives people across the
country a fun and accessible way to support life-changing research for
arthritis and autoimmune diseases like lupus, vasculitis and juvenile
Throughout the day, large-scale yoga "mega-sessions" will take place in
12 cities across Canada including Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary,
Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Kitchener-Waterloo, Toronto, Aurora,
Ottawa, Montreal, and Halifax. Canadians can register to participate in
a yoga mega-session and start collecting pledges through a personalized
fundraising page at www.powerofmovement.ca.
"I'm very excited to be leading the Power of Movement mega-session in
Vancouver for the third time," says Kim Scarrow, studio owner and
teacher at Moksha Yoga Vancouver. "I've lived with arthritis for almost
10 years now and I've discovered that both drug therapies and physical
movements, like yoga, help me manage my chronic pain."
Canadians who want to attend a mega-session but don't live in a
designated region can still participate through the Virtual Challenge which is assisted through the online yoga service of My Yoga Online and
everyone who registers receives a free 30-day membership to this online
From its humble beginnings as a small grassroots initiative in a Toronto
community centre almost five years ago, Power of Movement has grown to
challenge Canadians in every corner of the country to take action for
meaningful change in arthritis and autoimmune disease research. Money
raised will benefit arthritis and autoimmune disease research
priorities across the nation, through the Arthritis & Autoimmunity
Research Centre Foundation (AARCF) and the Canadian Arthritis Network.
