OTTAWA, Sept. 12, 2011 /CNW/ - Walmart Canada announced today that its
annual Canadian Red Cross campaign has raised $2.9 million for disaster
preparedness and response activities for communities across the
country. The record donation includes over $2.25 million from customer
donations and $658,000 from Walmart Canada's corporate matching grants.
"This year, more than 40,000 Canadians were impacted as hurricanes,
tornadoes, floods and wildfires swept across the country," said Conrad
Sauvé, secretary general and CEO of the Canadian Red Cross. "Never has
it been more important for us to be prepared."
All the funds raised through the campaign will stay in the same
communities where they were gathered to help in times of crisis. The
money raised will be used to support the Red Cross in providing those
in need with critical access to food, shelter and supplies as well as
emotional support and family reunification services.
"We thank Walmart Canada for their continued support of Red Cross
emergency relief and preparedness operations," added Sauvé. "Once
again their campaign has given Canadians the chance to make a modest
donation that has added up to make a big difference."
To date, Walmart Canada has donated and raised over $18 million to
support the Canadian Red Cross. This makes Walmart Canada the Canadian
Red Cross' leading corporate sponsor. The company provides additional
support during emergencies by working closely with the Red Cross to
deliver essential supplies.
"Since our partnership began with the Red Cross in 2003, we've been able
to assist thousands of Canadians with support when they needed it
most," said John Lawrence, director of corporate social responsibility
for Walmart Canada. "We're proud to do our part to ensure the Red Cross
is ready to respond when families are in need."
The Canadian Red Cross is a member of the International Red Cross and
Red Crescent Movement, which includes the International Federation of
Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, the International Committee of
