Canadian Ben Wilinofsky wins more than $1 million CAD at European Poker Tour event in Berlin

VANCOUVER, April 15 /CNW/ - Vancouver native, Ben Wilinofsky, cashed in for more than $1 million CAD after winning the Main Event at a European Poker Tour (EPT) event in Berlin, Germany.  This is the 22 year old Canadian's first ever cash in a live poker tournament.

Wilinofsky beat out a total of 773 players from 50 countries to claim the €825,000 grand prize ($1.15 million CAD) after winning his seat in the tournament by playing online at PokerStars.  This win continues an impressive string of Canadian poker players cashing in at top poker events around the world, including Montrealer Will Molson's million dollar cash at the PokerStars Carribbean Adventure in the Bahamas in January and reigning World Series of Poker Champion and Team PokerStars Pro, Jonathan Duhamel's quarter million dollar cash at the High-Roller Event at an EPT event in Deauville, France.

One of the biggest challenges Wilinofsky faced on the road to victory came before he even sat down at the poker table.   After his flight was cancelled, Wilinofsky nearly missed the event. "I had to jump through so many hoops to even get here! I ran very well and, for the most part, I played very well. My only goal was just to accumulate as many chips as possible so I guess I did that! I had to do everything right and hope for the best. Everyone on the final table played very well. They're great players and really nice guys as well. I am feeling so much overwhelming emotion I can't even think right now. It's incredible."

Despite this being Wilinofsky's first live tournament cash, he has found consistent success playing online, where he has earned more than one million dollars to date, including winning the PokerStars Super Tuesday event in November of 2010 and the PokerStars daily $100 rebuy event six times in the last two years.  Wins in those events alone amount to more than $300,000. Wilinofsky hopes to continue his success in live tournament play and is scheduled to play in several tournaments in Europe this spring including the PokerStars.net European Poker Tour stop in San Remo, Italy.
