OTTAWA, April 11 /CNW/ - "Canada's housing co-ops embrace the New
Democratic Party of Canada's commitments for affordable housing," said
Nicholas Gazzard, Executive Director of the Co-operative Housing
Federation of Canada (CHF Canada).
The NDP platform, released April 10, included commitments for affordable
housing providers across Canada. Most importantly, Canada's housing
co-ops were pleased to see a commitment to work with government
counterparts to increase the supply of affordable housing. In addition,
the inclusion of a permanent energy retrofit program, and a similar one
for helping seniors, were also welcomed.
"Canada's housing co-ops support commitments that will aim to increase
the number of affordable homes," said Gazzard. "Along with its
provincial, territorial and municipal partners, Canada's next
government can play a key role ensuring that federal housing dollars
are used to build more co-op homes. Today, nearly 1.5 million households, including seniors, the disabled,
working families, single parents and new Canadians, lack permanent
affordable housing options."
In addition to building new affordable homes, Canada's housing co-ops
are also encouraging parties to continue federal rent-geared-to-income (RGI) assistance to low-income households after
co-ops agreements with CMHC end in Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta,
Prince Edward Island and Quebec.
