Campbell Canada Partners with United Nations World Food Programme to Combat Childhood Hunger Through Sales of Nourish

Each time Canadians buy a Nourish product Campbell Canada will donate a can to Food Banks Canada and $0.25 to the UN World Food Programme

TORONTO, May 17 /CNW/ - Campbell Canada has extended its commitment to hunger relief with the announcement of a new partnership with the UN World Food Programme (WFP). Starting now, Campbell's new Nourish product -  the company's new complete meal designed to help address the issue of hunger - is available for purchase at participating grocery stores across Canada.  Each time Canadians buy a can of Nourish, Campbell Canada will donate one can to Food Banks Canada and $0.25 - the price of a school meal - to WFP to help fund school meal programs for children around the world. The WFP provides school meals to an average of 20 million children each year in 60 countries.

"The launch of Nourish was inspired by our belief that we have a responsibility to make healthier foods that taste great and are accessible to all Canadians regardless of their economic situation or geographic region.  Since the launch, Canadians have expressed their support for Nourish, many with a desire to purchase it, to help in the fight against hunger," says Philip Donne, president of Campbell Canada. "By making Nourish available in stores across Canada, 100 per cent of Campbell's Nourish net profits will fund hunger relief efforts including national donations to Food Banks Canada and global donations through the World Food Programme."

"When children start the day hungry, they can focus on little else, including their school work," said Nancy Roman, WFP's Director of Communications, Public Policy and Private Partnerships. "Campbell Canada's support will be a big boost to nourishing children, who can concentrate on their studies instead of worrying about where their next meal is coming from. It's a powerful investment in the next generation."

With the help of retailer partners equally committed to supporting hunger relief activities, Nourish will initially be available starting in May at grocery stores across Canada.  As of today, participating retailers include:  Co-op / Marketplace, Fairway Market, Longo's, Overwaitea Food Group (Save-On-Foods, Overwaitea Foods, Cooper's Foods, PriceSmart Foods), Safeway, and Sobeys Inc. (Sobeys, Sobeys Quebec, FreshCo). Nourish is available in two delicious, wholesome varieties: Hearty Chicken Bean and Six Vegetable Grain for a suggested retail price of $2.49.

Since the launch of Nourish in February 2011, more than 28,000 Canadians have joined Campbell Canada in helping to alleviate hunger through Campbell Canada's Facebook page and on Twitter.  These activities have triggered the donation of a further 90,000 cans of Nourish to Food Banks Canada in addition to Campbell's initial 100,000 can donation.

Canadians can continue to support the issue of hunger by:

  • sharing their feedback at www.facebook.com/CampbellCanada or on Twitter with #Nourish to help us reach a donation goal of an additional 100,000 cans to Food Banks Canada by Hunger Awareness Day on May 31.
  • buying a can of Nourish at their local grocery store to enjoy themselves or to donate to their local food bank.

About Nourish
Launched with an initial 100,000-can donation to Food Banks Canada, Nourish is a complete meal with a full serving of three food groups1.  A first-of-its kind product intended to help address food security, Nourish is a delicious, nutrient-dense product that can be enjoyed by everyone from the average Canadian to those in need at food banks or impacted by disaster situations.

Designed to be eaten either heated or at room temperature, each 425 g can of Nourish has a pop-top lid, 24-month shelf-life, and doesn't require the addition of water, making it an ideal solution for food banks in Canada or in disaster-relief situations around the world.  Nourish uses unique 'Naked Oats,' developed by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada scientists and licensed to a grower in Manitoba, to help provide nutrients such as protein, iron and calcium.
