Bluewater Health Another Step Closer to Completing Redevelopment Project

Project Created 300 Construction Jobs at Peak

SARNIA, ON, Nov. 15, 2011 /CNW/ - Bluewater Health and its partners EllisDon Corporation and Infrastructure Ontario are pleased to announce that substantial completion has been reached on the hospital's redevelopment and expansion project, on schedule and within budget. Substantial completion means that construction is complete in accordance with the project agreement and the redeveloped facility has been turned over to the hospital.

The largest public sector redevelopment project in Sarnia-Lambton's history, Bluewater Health's redevelopment and expansion was designed by Farrow Partnership and built by EllisDon Corporation. Construction began in October 2007 and has involved the creation of a new seven-storey addition to the existing London Building and renovations within the Russell Building. Approximately 300 construction workers were on-site daily at the peak of construction.

With the redevelopment project having reached substantial completion, Bluewater Health has turned its attention to final occupancy plans. During the week of November 21, all services presently located at the hospital's Mitton Site will be relocated into their renovated space in the Russell Building at the new facility. This includes Inpatient and Outpatient Mental Health programs, Outpatient Diabetes and Clinical Nutrition services as well as a number of support services such as Administration, Human Resources and Finance.

Health Care Relocations, a company that specializes in hospital moves, has been retained to coordinate the moves alongside the hospital team. Staff is currently being trained and oriented to the new facility, packing has begun and equipment and furnishings have been assessed and identified for the move. Other pieces that no longer meet quality or safety standards are being sold at public auction while some items have been donated for local or overseas charitable efforts.

Bluewater Health continues to work with municipal and provincial officials regarding the future use of the Mitton Site property once it is no longer occupied by the hospital. Measures are being taken to secure and maintain the site while its future use is reviewed.

Infrastructure Ontario and the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care have worked with Bluewater Health and EllisDon Corporation to redevelop the hospital, which will remain publicly owned, publicly controlled and publicly accountable.
