TORONTO, Feb. 23 /CNW/ - It's hard to believe that in this day and age
there are girls, both in Canada and around the world, who lack the same
opportunities and securities that are guaranteed to boys. The
startling stats speak for themselves: Did you know that girls are three
times more likely to be malnourished than boys and in the poorest
countries of the world, 50% of girls do not attend secondary school?1
The good news is people are working together to help change these
figures. This February, Plan Canada's Because I am a Girl, is partnering with glacéau smartwater and two time Olympic champion
Jennifer Heil to help in its global mission to claim a bright and safer
future for girls.
As a Plan Canada ambassador, Jenn Heil is passionate about this cause as
she's seen first-hand the positive change and hope that Because I am a Girl brings to the most devastated corners of the world.
Together, through the smartgirls challenge, Jenn Heil, Because I Am a Girl and glacéau smartwater are asking Canadians to show how they've made a
difference in the lives of girls and women.
The smartgirls challenge runs now until April 30, 2011. Entrants must show through a
short essay how their efforts have made a difference in the lives of
girls or women either in their community or internationally. Three
winners will be selected to join Jenn Heil on a once-in-a-lifetime trip
to Rwanda this August to help celebrate the completion of a new school
for girls. Canadian residents aged 16 and up are eligible to enter.
Through the smartgirls challenge, Plan Canada, Jenn Heil and smartwater aim to spread the word
about the Because I Am a Girl campaign while sharing the message to girls that being smart is
