Aviva Canada establishes temporary Slave Lake office

Additional claims adjusters in the area to help start the rebuild process

TORONTO, May 27, 2011 /CNW/ - As the residents of Slave Lake, Alberta return to their properties after the lifting of the evacuation order, Aviva Canada, one of the country's leading providers of home, auto, recreational vehicle, group and business insurance, has established a temporary Slave Lake location and deployed a team of 20 field staff to more efficiently serve the needs of area customers.

Aviva's new temporary office will be open for customers as of Saturday, May 28 and located at Nicolet Insurance Ltd, 429 Main Street NE, Slave Lake.

"We've been in Athabasca since the Monday evening after the fires and have assisted over 100 customers so far. With our move to a new temporary location in Slave Lake and the additional staff, we'll be able to serve our customers more efficiently and effectively," stated Peter Corsano, Senior Manager, Catastrophe Coordinator with Aviva Canada.

Slave Lake and area customers of Aviva, Aviva Traders and Aviva Elite that have not reported a claim are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. Those customers are asked to call Aviva at 1-866 MY AVIVA (1-866-692-8482) or drop by our temporary Slave Lake office.

Area customers that have already contacted Aviva, either by phone or in person at the temporary Athabasca location, will be contacted by an Aviva adjuster within 48 hours of the town re-opening to start damage evaluation and repair.

The high level of damage caused by the fires has put significant pressure on the local infrastructure, and contractors will be focusing on those most badly hit first. As such, residents with lesser damage are asked to be patient with the repair timing.

Residents returning to their homes are also advised of a serious health risk.

  • As area homes have been without power for more than two days, any item contained in a refrigerator or freezer is no longer safe for consumption.
  • Any refrigerator or freezer containing food items that has been without power for more than two days is also considered contaminated and is no longer safe for use.
  • Refrigerators and freezers, with contents still inside, should be securely sealed using strong tape and moved to the curb for pickup. If you are unable to move these items to the curb, please let your Aviva representative know and arrangements will be made to have the items removed from your home.
