A NATION OF STUDENTS AGAINST IMPAIRED DRIVING

TORONTO, May 13 /CNW/ - Students from Yellowknife to Bathurst meet today and through the weekend at Sheridan College in Oakville to fight impaired driving in Canada.

International speakers Floor Leishout of YOURS and Manpreet Darroch of the UK will address the delegation of students with a message for international action for safer roads. It is the largest youth conference in Canada against impaired driving with 450 students and advisors in attendance.

A chain of life will be formed on Trafalgar Road Friday at 11:30 to engage Ontarians in this 30 year old battle. In the afternoon, displays including a live Choose Your Ride "poster" will form the backdrop for sharing via a "trade show" with information from arrive alive DRIVE SOBER(R), MADD and others.

"Road Stories" - an Ontario born and produced educational DVD will also be released for national use. Road Stories has been evaluated by medical and academic peers and has been presented on and recognized internationally.

Distracted driving gets attention at the conference with a call to "leave the phone alone". Distracted driving is of increasing concern for police and road safety experts alike.

Each year there are 2,419 fatalities on our roads and 12,360 serious injuries; youth are consistently over-represented in these datum. Canada currently ranks 9th in the world for traffic fatalities. This marks the 25th conference hosted by Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving (OSAID).
