$78 million investment and creation of more than 50 clean technology jobs in Candiac - NEW PHOSTECH LITHIUM PLANT INAUGURATED

MONTREAL, April 8 /CNW Telbec/ - Phostech Lithium—a subsidiary of German specialty chemicals group Süd-Chemie AG—today opened in Candiac the largest plant in the world to use a superior quality process for the production of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) for use in new generations of batteries for electric and hybrid vehicles. The construction of Phostech Lithium's new facilities represents a $78 million investment and will enable some fifty jobs to be created.

Phostech Lithium develops, manufactures and sells phosphate cathode materials for the lithium battery market. This new plant—the first of its size to manufacture LFP using a new patented wet chemistry synthesis process—will have an annual volume of 2,500 metric tonnes, which is equivalent to approximately 50,000 electric car batteries or up to 500,000 hybrid car batteries. The Phostech Lithium investment project received support from Invest Québec, Emploi Québec, Canada Economic Development, the Centre local de développement (CLD) de Roussillon [local development centre] and Montréal International.

"We would like to thank Montréal International in particular for supporting our Candiac investment project. We received effective strategic support to obtain the government assistance needed for the project," said Christian Knobloch, General Manager of Phostech Lithium.

"Montréal International is pleased to have contributed to the Phostech Lithium project in Candiac. This is a significant milestone in the development of a dynamic sustainable transportation sector in Greater Montréal. This investment further strengthens the metropolitan region's position in the clean technology sector—a highly strategic sector for the future," explained Jacques St-Laurent, President and CEO of Montréal International.
