2010 report: Fondation Hydro-Québec pour l’environnement helped protect over 800 ha of natural habitat

MONTREAL, April 26 /CNW Telbec/ - In 2010, the Fondation Hydro-Québec pour l'environnement granted nearly a million dollars in assistance to 15 projects in nine regions of Québec. Through its partners' efforts, the organization helped protect the habitats of close to 30 species of vulnerable plants and animals, as well as four rivers and 842 ha of land and wetlands.

The Foundation's Annual Report 2010, released online April 20, describes those 15 not-for-profit and municipal initiatives. The Foundation's partners are taking practical steps to protect, restore and enhance natural areas and educate communities about local environmental issues.

The Baie de Rimouski, for instance—an important ecosystem for migrating waterfowl—is exposed to intensive local use and tourism. It was targeted by an enhancement project carried out by the Comité ZIP du Sud-de-l'Estuaire. Similarly, the Rivière Ha! Ha! delta wetlands, devastated by the Saguenay flooding of 1996, have been restored to recreate conditions hospitable to the flora and fauna formerly found there.

Sustainable work

In 2010, the appropriateness and sustainability of work supported by the Foundation in recent years were demonstrated in several ways. In June, Pointe aux Pins on Île aux Grues—protected with Foundation backing in 2007—became the Jean-Paul-Riopelle nature reserve, reaffirming its long-term conservational role. In October, more than twice as many brook trout used the fish pass on the Rivière à Mars in the Saguenay region as the year before, demonstrating the suitability of habitats restored thanks to contributions from the Foundation in 2006 and 2008.
