10 CHARGED WITH CONSPIRACY AND POSSESSION OF CONTRABAND TOBACCO

CORNWALL, ON, June 30, 2011 /CNW/ - The Cornwall Regional Task Force (CRTF) made six (6) contraband tobacco seizures in the following jurisdictions between June 15th and June 28th, 2011:

  • Two (2) seizures in South Glengarry, Ontario;
  • One (1) seizure in North Glengarry, Ontario;
  • One (1) seizure in South Dundas, Ontario;
  • One (1) seizure in Clarence Township; and
  • One (1) seizure in Russell Township.

As a result of an investigation conducted by the CRTF and Cornwall's Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit - Contraband Tobacco Team (CFSEU-CTT), an alleged organized crime group involved in contraband tobacco smuggling from the Prevost Point Road area, South Glengarry, was disrupted.

Between April 13th, 2011 and June 26th, 2011, the following individuals have been arrested and charged with Conspiracy, Section 465(1)(c) of the Criminal Code, with Possession of Unstamped Tobacco, contrary to Section 32(1) of the Excise Act, 2001, and/or are facing or have been charged under the provincial Tobacco Tax Act for possession of unmarked cigarettes:

  • Pierre Shawn BRUNET (age 24), Chantal Cathy BRUNET (age 19), Renald Albert BRUNET (age 57), Joanne Doris BRUNET (age 50), all from South Glengarry;
  • Gerard John BOURGON (age 36) and Nigel Abraham GRANT (age 24), both from South Stormont;
  • Adam Arthur DEROUCHIE (age 28) from Cornwall;
  • Jonathan George BROWN (age 24) from Calgary, AB.

Matthew Francisco AROZ (age 27) and Jean-Charles DUMONT, both from South Glengarry, have been charged with one (1) count each of Conspiracy for their involvement.  DUMONT has also been charged for failure to comply with his Recognizance, Section 145(3) of the Criminal Code.

During this investigation, the following items were seized:

  • 2 vessels;
  • 3 vehicles (2 trucks and one car);
  • $2,800 in Canadian currency;
  • 2,150 re-sealable bags and/or cartons each containing 200 contraband cigarettes

In addition to the above mentioned investigation, the CRTF effected five (5) additional seizures, which resulted in the arrests of seven (7) individuals who will be facing charges under the federal Excise Act, 2001 and/or the provincial Tobacco Tax Act for possession of unmarked cigarettes.

Items seized from these five (5) seizures:

  • Two (2) pickup trucks, one (1) car, and one (1) cargo trailer;
  • 14,222 re-sealable bags and/or cartons each containing 200 contraband cigarettes;
  • 4.6 grams of cannabis marihuana as well as related drug paraphernalia.

The CRTF continues to address the complaints of suspicious activity observed by local residents. If anyone notices suspicious activity, they are urged to please contact the CRTF at 613-937-2800 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The CRTF is a joint forces partnership that includes the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada Border Services Agency, Ontario Provincial Police, Ontario Ministry of Revenue and Cornwall Community Police Service.
