Bio-Methatech breakthrough in Vermont - A first turnkey Biogas Project will be built in Spring 2012
The biomethanisation of farmer residues will allow a dairy farm in Franklin, Vermont, to produce electricity, heat and bedding for its animals, while using a renewable energy resource.
MONTREAL, Feb. 8, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Bio-Methatech signed a contract to build, in spring 2012, a biogas system on Riverview Farm, located in Franklin, Vermont.
The owners have a herd of 450 dairy cows and intend to produce electricity which will be sold to the public electricity network. Heat produced by the co-generator will be recovered to maintain the temperature of the digester as well as to heat the buildings. To produce the biogas, animal waste, farm waste and other organic waste will be treated in an anaerobic digester. The project has a capacity of 180 kW.
After pressing, the digested residues in the process will also provide bedding for the animals.
In practice, biomethanisation is a natural biochemical process of recovery from the fermentation of organic wastes, which produces green energy: Biogas. During this process the methane emissions in the atmosphere are reduced. The gas is produced in a sealed tank called a digester. The biogas is composed of 60% to 70% methane and this energy is captured and burned in a co-generator to produce electricity and heat.
Biomethanisation thus provides:
- A renewable source of energy
- A positive energy balance
- A reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere
- The production of clean and quality bedding
- A respectful cycle of organic waste
Economic and community benefits for the farm - The owners will succeed at increasing their annual incomes by selling electricity at an attractive rate.
Following the digestion of the manure and other compostable materials, the residues have no odor which allows for harmonious coexistence with the community during the periods of manure spreading.
Founded in 2008, Bio-Methatech is a company that designs and builds Digesters for renewable energy: biogas, with the technology of LIPP GmbH.
We are proud to offer world-class biogas systems which are designed and manufactured in Canada, to the specifications of North American customers. Developed in Germany, the patented LIPP Double-Fold System® allows quick and easy installation of a high quality and long lasting system.
In addition, we offer turnkey projects to ensure peace of mind to our customers.
About LIPP digesters
In its unique digestion process, LIPP incorporates an unmatched set of components that helps to maximize the biogas production while minimizing the operating costs.
The system is optimized to operate at temperatures that ensure the survival of methanogenic bacteria, between 37 and 42oC (98-107oF). LIPP mixing system also allows floating products (oils and fats) to be periodically redirected to the bottom of the digester, where they can be methanized.
The overflow system is located in the middle part of the digester, where organic material is highly digested. Unlike other mixers, the system ensures that organic material is completely digested.
The drainage system is located in a central cavity, situated at the bottom of the digester. The roundabout internal current in the digester cans allows for sediments to accumulate around this area, where they are easily extracted. With this procedure drainage becomes very efficient, especially with regards to sediments and floating organic material. The LIPP system can be operated continuously without any other maintenance than that the mixer engine.
The heating system, which has a high rate of heat transfer and low power consumption, is an essential asset during our cold winters.
The biogas storage is unique to the LIPP digestion process. A low pressure tank is integrated in the anaerobic digestion system, protected by the solid structure of the roof, which allows biogas to be stored safely.
Over a period of 35 years, LIPP has built and brought into service over 700 installations around the world in countries such as: Germany, Holland, Switzerland, China, Japan, Australia, Peru, Italy, Canada and now in the USA. This international recognition has earned the trust of numerous large corporations.
