Patrick Chan donates ISU Grand Prix winnings to vulnerable children and youth in Canada

TORONTO, Dec. 14, 2011 /CNW/ - Patrick Chan understands the transformative power of arts and sports in the life of a child. It's the reason the Toronto resident is donating half of his recent winnings from the 2011 ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final in Quebec City to the Children's Aid Foundation's Ignite the Spark Fund.

"I am so pleased to do my small part by donating prize money from the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final to a worthy Canadian charity that works with children, youth and families and contributes to their health and well being," Chan said.

Chan feels fortunate that he had the support of his parents growing up and says that it is a factor he feels was critical to his success today. That is why he believes that he has an obligation to give back to children who may not receive the same opportunities.

"This unexpected gesture of support reinforces our view of Patrick as a tremendous role model for young people. His dedication to excellence exists not only on the ice, but deep within himself as a champion for children in need of support and inspiration," said Andrea Weissman-Daniels, founder of the Children's Aid Foundation's Ignite the Spark Fund with her husband Mark Daniels.

The founders created Spark in response to the growing needs of more than 300,000 children who are either in foster care or under the watchful care of social workers while living at home with their families. For these kids, participating in hockey or dance lessons is unlikely as the cost is prohibitive. However, such experiences are important in developing self-esteem, interpersonal skills and building the emotional and physical strength needed to persevere.

Chan's commitment to give back will continue into 2012, as he and four other Canadian luminaries will serve as ambassadors for the Spark annual fundraiser in Toronto on Sunday, May 6th, 2012.

"I am inspired by the wonderful vision of the Ignite the Spark Fund- which gives underprivileged children and youth an opportunity to obtain valuable insights and life-skills through sports. With the full support of my family, I hope others will join me in supporting the Children's Aid Foundation," added Chan.
