Join the Ontario Heritage Trust, the Mark S. Bonham Centre for Sexual Diversity Studies and the University of Toronto for the unveiling of a provincial plaque commemorating Sexual Diversity Activism at the University of Toronto.
In recognition of the history of sexual diversity advocacy at the University of Toronto, a provincial plaque will mark the significance of the pioneering efforts of the University of Toronto Homophile Association (UTHA), founded in October 1969. UTHA was the first group of its kind in the province to advocate equality for gays and lesbians, bringing visibility to a traditionally marginalized sexual minority and igniting the gay liberation movement in Ontario and across the country. The type of activism that UTHA nurtured would give way to a sustained and valuable tradition of advocacy and education concerning sexual diversity.
The Ontario Heritage Trust's Provincial Plaque Program commemorates significant people, places and events in Ontario's history. Since 1953, over 1,200 provincial plaques have been unveiled.
