Trudeau Foundation Announces Latest $225,000 Fellowship Prize Winners

Fellows to Gather Today in Toronto

MONTREAL, Oct. 17, 2011 /CNW/ - The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation announced today the latest recipients of the prestigious Trudeau Fellowship prize.  Each prize is worth $225,000. Trudeau Fellowships are awarded to individuals who set themselves apart through research achievements, creativity and commitment to critical social issues of importance to Canada. The four new 2011 Trudeau Fellows are based in Vancouver, Kingston, Toronto and Montreal, with backgrounds in political science, conflict resolution, history and Muslim and women's studies.

The 2011 Trudeau Fellows are:

• Macartan Humphreys, (Visiting) University of British Columbia: The faculty and students of the University of British Columbia will benefit from the expertise of Columbia University Prof. Humphreys, internationally acclaimed for his innovative field experiment approach to issues such as the influence of resource management on civil war.
  
  
• John McGarry, Queen's University: Prof. McGarry exemplifies Canadian expertise in conflict resolution and peacekeeping and is actively engaged in the critical negotiations currently taking place in Cyprus.
  
  
• Haideh Moghissi, York University: After a prolific career in Iran as an archivist, Prof. Moghissi became an internationally acclaimed analyst of women's issues in the Muslim world.
  
  
• Ronald Rudin, Concordia University: Prof. Rudin is a renowned social historian innovatively trying to combine various technologies and media—books, films, Internet, GPS—to tell stories about the past.

Forest, President of the Trudeau Foundation. "Trudeau Fellows possess the talent, drive and potential to anticipate, understand and engage in our most pressing challenges, ultimately helping us build a better Canada."

The 2011 Trudeau Fellows, who will be introduced at a reception in Toronto today, join a growing community of researchers and creators involved in an impressive diversity of fields. Nominations are put forward by an extensive nomination network in Canada and abroad, and an independent jury of eminent researchers and intellectuals proposes to the Board of Directors a list of Fellows, based on their leadership qualities, productivity, reputation and demonstrated ability to communicate. In most cases, Trudeau Fellows are not aware that they have been nominated until they receive a call from the Foundation.
