As a professor in the Institute of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering and the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry at the University of Toronto, her work on the development of heart tissue has been widely acclaimed for its ability to improve the quality of life for the estimated 70,000 Canadians who suffer heart attacks each year. Professor Radisic's research has focused on developing new heart tissue that can replace the damaged tissue and significantly reduce the likelihood of congestive heart failure. She was named one of the Top 35 Innovators Under 35 by MIT's Technology Review.

Engineering Medal: Entrepreneurship

Stephan Matusch, P.Eng.
Mr. Matusch is cofounder of Ionic Engineering Ltd. Under his direction, the company's automated systems division expanded from a one-man operation to a multi-disciplinary group of over 50 employees generating $7.5 million in annual revenue, with projects on every continent. He realized that robotic and other technologies had become sufficiently robust for heavy industry and, as a result, has been a leader in applying these technologies in harsh environments. In 2006, Mr. Matusch received the 40 Under Forty Award from Northern Ontario Business.

Engineering Medal: Research and Development

Elizabeth A. Edwards, P.Eng.
Engineer Edwards is an innovative researcher and well-respected educator. A Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Toronto, she is also Director of BioZone, a new centre for collaborative bioengineering within the Department of Chemical Engineering and Applied Chemistry. Professor Edwards has achieved international recognition for her pioneering research on the biological processes affecting pollutants in the environment. Her research on anaerobic biotransformation has significantly contributed to improving the understanding, management, and remediation of hydrocarbon contamination. She was the first to report mineralization of toluene and xylenes under sulphate-reducing conditions.

Douglas Perovic, P.Eng.
Professor Perovic, a Professor and former Chair of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto, has achieved and demonstrated a profound understanding of the structure, properties and performance and advance materials systems particularly in the areas associated with nanotechnology. He is internationally recognized for his innovative work in the fields of scanning and transmission electron microscopy applied to semiconductors and metallic alloys, thin film nanostructures and failure analysis. He also led the creation of the multi-industry, multi-university Centre for Microelectronics Assembly and Packaging, the first of its kind in Canada.

David Zingg, P.Eng.
Dr. Zingg works at the forefront of research in computational aerodynamics. He is Director of the University of Toronto Institute for Aerospace Studies (UTIAS), the top academic aerospace research institute in Canada and among the best in the world. Among Professor Zingg's many honours and awards are the Canada Research Chair in Computational Aerodynamics and Environmentally-Friendly Aircraft Design—which he has held for the past ten years—and the J. Armand Bombardier Foundation Chair in Aerospace Flight. In 2009, Professor Zingg was awarded the University of Toronto Faculty Award for excellence in research and teaching, and in 2010 he was inducted into the Canadian Academy of Engineering.
