EXCITON TECHNOLOGIES RECEIVES HEALTH CANADA APPROVAL TO MARKET SILVER WOUND DRESSING
EDMONTON, Jan. 17 /CNW/ - Exciton Technologies Inc. today announced the Company has received Health Canada approval to market the exsaltTM SD7 Wound Dressing within Canada. The dressing is a Class II medical device initially targeting the treatment of serious burns and chronic wounds. The exsaltTM SD7 Wound Dressing incorporates Exciton's patented platform coating technology, which utilizes a unique form of silver as the active ingredient.
"This achievement represents a significant team effort and a strong belief in our product," stated Rod Precht, Exciton's President and Founder. "To date, our technologies have demonstrated superior attributes over other leading silver technologies, allowing us to offer effective products at a highly competitive price. With the approval from Health Canada and FDA clearance back in 2009, we can now finalize our commercialization efforts to sell the exsaltTM SD7 Wound Dressing throughout North America. Health Canada approval is a significant achievement, requiring stringent ISO 13485 medical device manufacturing certification prior to filing, and paves the way for regulatory approval in other countries."
The global wound care market was $14 billion in 2008 and is expected to exceed $17 billion by 2012. A recent resurgence in the use of silver dressings has been largely due to an increase in the number of antimicrobial-resistant organisms. With a long history of safety, silver continues to be the most promising antimicrobial treatment in a market segment expected to exceed $750 million by 2015. Initial evaluations of the exsaltTM SD7 Wound Dressing within the US last year have validated the performance of this next generation product within a rapidly growing market.
