JOEL WAPNICK SPELLS V-I-C-T-O-R-Y AT THE 2011 CANADIAN NATIONAL SCRABBLE® CHAMPIONSHIP
Two-time winner to represent Canada at the 2011 World Championship
TORONTO, June 13, 2011 /CNW Telbec/ - After four days of intense word play and a riveting best-of-five-finale, Joel Wapnick, a 65 year old McGill University Music Professor and former world champion, spelled his way to the top and will be crowned the 2011 Canadian National SCRABBLE® Champion, .
Wapnick scored 423 points in the winning round and racked up major points on words such as "deistic" (81), "feijoas" (84) and "zarf" (48).
The Canadian National SCRABBLE® Championship, the seventh since its inception in 1996, brought together the top 52 elite SCRABBLE® competitors from across the country. The event took place in the Piccadilly room at The Bond Place Hotel in Toronto between Friday, June 10th and Monday, June 13th .
Along with the title of Canadian Champion and bragging rights and possession of a trophy, participants played for a $7,000 prize and the chance to represent Canada at the 2011 World Championship in Warsaw, Poland this October.
"I feel very fortunate to have won against the best player in the world, " Wapnick said . "I look forward to representing Canada in 2011."
Wapnick is the author of "How to play Scrabble like a champion" and was also a past winner of this event, as well as the North American championship. He will be returning to Montreal this afternoon, but available for interviews for the remainder of the week.
The Canadian National SCRABBLE® Championship was organized by Toronto Scrabble Club Director John Chew (also the co-president of the governing body for competitive SCRABBLE play, the North American SCRABBLE Players Association, NASPA), and sponsored by game manufacturer Hasbro Canada Corporation. NASPA's partner organization, the National SCRABBLE® Association (NSA) hosted the event's web coverage, including statistics, photographs and interactive games, attracting millions of page hits over the weekend.
