City of Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson joins company at kick-off event

VANCOUVER, April 20 /CNW/ -

WHAT:  You are invited to a joint announcement with Starbucks and the City of Vancouver at the Hastings and Howe St. Starbucks location to learn about a new recycling program that includes front-of-store collection beginning April 21st in honour of Earth Day for all Starbucks paper and plastic cups.
  Representatives from City of Vancouver and Starbucks will be on hand to discuss:
 
  • An overview of the new program and how it will impact Starbucks stores and customers across British Columbia
 
  • How businesses and municipalities can work together to improve recycling infrastructure
 
  • Vancouver's targets towards being the "greenest" city in North America by 2020
 
  • Practical guidance for consumers on how to recycle items at Starbucks
     Visuals will include:
 
  • Photo opportunity with Mayor Gregor Robertson
 
  • Starbucks new front-of-store recycling bins and signage; and
 
  • Starbucks partner (employee) and customer interactions (in store).

WHERE:  Hastings and Howe Starbucks, corner of West Hastings and Howe Streets, Vancouver, BC.
WHY:   
 
  • Starbucks is helping to pave the way for all coffee houses in Vancouver to offer cup recycling across BC by collaborating with waste management companies to make cups a recyclable item.
 
  • Starbucks will offer front-of-store collection for coffee cups, lids and sleeves, in addition to newspapers, glass bottles, organic wastes, etc.
 
  • Starbucks has worked with its waste management partners to ensure cups are going to be recycled at mixed paper facilities and not landfills or incinerators.
 
  • Already available in Ontario, this is the first recycling program of its kind in BC to accept single-serve cups
 
  • Starbucks goal is to implement front-of-store recycling in all of its company-owned locations by 2015.
