Safety Notice - Recall of Certain GE Dishwashers

TORONTO, Oct. 27 /CNW/ -

MEDIA HOLDING STATEMENT:
General Electric Company (GE) in cooperation with the Electrical Safety Authority and Health Canada has announced a recall of certain GE Profile and GE Monogram dishwashers manufactured for Canada. The GE Profile™ and GE Monogram® Dishwashers are operated by an electronic control mounted inside the top of the door.

This is a voluntary recall. It includes 5,322 GE Profile and GE Monogram dishwashers. The GE Profile brand models were manufactured July 2003 through December 2005 and the GE Monogram units January 2004 through December 2006.

GE has been made aware of five instances of escaped fires, four of which in the US caused damage to the kitchen counter-tops where the dishwashers were installed and one of which in Canada caused damage to adjacent cabinets and smoke damage to the home. No injuries have been reported in US or Canada.

We ask that you not use your dishwasher until it is repaired and disconnect the electric supply by shutting off the fuse or circuit breaker controlling it and inform all users of the dishwasher about the risk of fire.

GE has determined that water condensation can drip onto the electronic control board, potentially causing a short circuit and resulting in an overheated connector. This poses a fire hazard to consumers.

We are diligently contacting consumers with impacted dishwashers and will repair the unit free of charge or offer a rebate if consumers wish to replace their existing model. We are doing everything we can to make the recall as easy and hassle-free for consumers as possible.

GE will provide a free repair to all consumers with units affected by the recall.
