Siemens continues to solidify its leading wind power market position in Ontario, Canada

Siemens receives second order for wind turbines from Brookfield Renewable Power

BURLINGTON, ON, Oct 7 /CNW/ - Siemens Energy has been awarded an order for 72 of its 2.3-MW SWT-2.3-101 wind turbines for the Comber Wind Limited Partnership Project in Essex County, Ontario. The purchaser is Brookfield Renewable Power Inc., a leading producer and developer of renewable energy. Once completed, the 166-megawatt (MW) wind farm is expected to provide clean power for approximately 55,000 homes. This order follows a recently announced major wind turbine agreement with Samsung C&T Corporation and Pattern Energy for the supply of wind turbines with a total capacity of up to 600 MW in southern Ontario.

"This Comber project is further evidence of the increasing importance of renewable energy in Canada, and specifically in the Province of Ontario. We are very pleased to continue to work with  Brookfield Renewable Power, a company that has demonstrated a strong commitment to clean energy sources and that is committed to growing its base of world-class generating assets," stated Bill Smith, Senior Vice President, Siemens Canada Limited. Consistent with the Green Energy Act, the towers will be sourced within Ontario. According to the Canadian Wind Energy Association, Ontario is the current provincial leader in installed wind energy capacity, accounting for 1,248 MW of wind energy development.

The scope for the Comber wind energy project includes the supply and commissioning of the wind turbines, as well as a two-year service, maintenance and warranty agreement. Delivery of the best-selling wind turbines will begin in May 2011, and commissioning of the Comber wind farm is expected to be completed in September 2011.

"The Comber Wind Project will be our third wind farm in Ontario and we are pleased to be using Siemens turbines for a second time. We look forward to working with the Siemens organization again in adding more clean, renewable energy for Ontario," said Richard Legault, President and Chief Executive Office, Brookfield Renewable Power Inc.

Siemens and Brookfield Renewable Power first partnered on the Gosfield Wind project located in the Town of Kingsville, Essex County, Ontario, in 2009. The 50-MW Gosfield Wind farm utilizes 22 SWT-2.3-101 turbines and has been operational since September 2010.

Wind power is part of Siemens' Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal 2009, revenue from the Portfolio totaled approximately EUR23 billion, making Siemens the world's largest supplier of environmentally friendly technologies. In the same period, the company's products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons. This amount equals the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, Tokyo, London and Berlin.
