OTTAWA, July 3 /CNW Telbec/ - The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies
wants to remind all Canadians of the needless pain and injury animals suffer
during this season, a time when rodeos and regional fairs exploit animals for
profit and entertainment.
The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, a national animal welfare
organization representing SPCAs and humane societies from coast to coast, is
opposed to rodeos and supports the abolition of these spectacles. "Any events
that use devices that cause pain, suffering or injury to animals should be
eliminated" says Chief Executive Officer Steve Carroll. "Even though some
rodeos are considered heritage acts on a regional basis, these events undo
years of work we and other animal welfare organizations have done to promote
the humane treatment of animals." In the short-term, the CFHS believes that it
can best reduce and end suffering of animals used in rodeo by targeting
specific rodeo events for elimination.
We oppose additional rodeo events that are likely to cause pain,
suffering or injury to animals including any events that involve the throwing
with ropes of any animal, wrestling or fighting with any animal. We are also
opposed to the use of any device likely to cause pain, suffering, or injury,
and that is solely employed to alter the animal's natural behaviour or
performance. This also applies to continuance to completion of any event once
an animal has been injured in the course of the event (e.g., animals injured
during chuck-wagon races).

The Canadian Federation of Humane Societies (CFHS) is the only national
voice of humane societies and SPCAs. We work collaboratively with our member
societies and Canadians coast to coast to promote respect and humane treatment
toward all animals. To learn more or to donate, visit www.cfhs.ca.
