Toronto Hydro Corporation Releases 2008 Corporate Responsibility Report

    Company Establishes its Carbon Emission Baseline and Reduction Targets

    TORONTO, July 24 /CNW/ -

    NEWS

    Toronto Hydro Corporation ("Toronto Hydro") announced today that it has
published its second Corporate Responsibility (CR) report. Toronto Hydro views
the CR report as a key corporate record of its activities, complementing its
Annual Report. A significant part of preparing the report was the setting of a
benchmark to measure the company's progress in becoming a carbon-neutral
organization. Additionally, this report aligns with the City's Climate Change
Action Plan and the province's 'conservation culture' policies which are being
implemented through the Green Energy Act (Bill 150).
    2008 was the first time the company reported greenhouse gas emissions
caused by its operations and created a baseline against which future carbon
emission reductions would be measured. Moving forward, Toronto Hydro will work
to meet its commitment to clean air, energy self-sufficiency and sustainable
business practices. The greenhouse gas emissions baseline was assured by a
third party.
    The report is available in both hard copy and on the corporate website at
www.torontohydro.com, with links to additional information on specific
activities.2008 highlights include:

    - Greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1 and Scope 2) totaled 152,700 tonnes
       CO2e down from the 2007 total of 156,800 tonnes CO2e. This is a
       decrease of approximately 2.7 per cent;

    - System reliability has improved since 2007: the average duration of
       customer power interruptions was reduced by 6.43 minutes, and the
       number of customer power interruptions reduced to an average of 1.8
       per year;

    - Total electricity consumed, line losses and fuel used for fleet are
       all trending downward from 2007;

    - The Corporation's conservation and demand management programs (CDM)
       have continued to reduce peak demand and kilowatt hour energy
       consumption in Toronto in 2008;

    - More than $500,000 was invested in community initiatives, support for
       local economic development activities and financial aid for vulnerable
       residents;

    - Since 2007, approximately 10,000 native trees have been planted in
       areas across the City of Toronto, with support from Toronto Hydro;

    - For 2009, Toronto Hydro was named: one of Canada's Top 100 Employers
       by the Top 100 Employers organization; one of Canada's Top 20 Family
       Friendly Employers as reported in Today's Parent Magazine, one of
       Canada's Greenest Employers, and one of Greater Toronto's Top 75
       Employers as reported by The Toronto Star.QUOTE - David O'Brien, President and CEO, Toronto Hydro Corporation

    "Quantifying the extent of the company's environmental footprint was no
small undertaking. At the end of the day, we know where we're doing well and
where we need to do better. Now that we have a benchmark, we can make the key
decisions that we will no doubt have to make in terms of reducing our carbon
footprint."
    O'Brien adds, "Without the rigour that goes into this type of analysis,
the decision-making process can seem arbitrary, but because our approach is
data-driven, I'm confident that our strategic decisions will be sound."
