Schering-Plough Canada announces a $30.7 million expansion of its production plant in Pointe-Claire

POINTE-CLAIRE, QC, Oct. 5 /CNW Telbec/ - Schering-Plough Canada today announced it will invest over $30 million to expand its Pointe-Claire production plant. Joining in the announcement were Economic Development, Innovation and Export Trade Minister Clément Gignac, MNA for Jacques-Cartier Geoffrey Kelley, and Pointe-Claire Mayor Bill McMurchie.

"We are very pleased to have partnered with the Government of Québec on this important project," said Carlos Dourado, President and General Manager of Schering-Plough Canada. "Investissement Québec provided a $3 million grant and this was very important in Schering-Plough Corporation choosing Quebec for this facility, among many other possible locations around the world."

Mr. Dourado also thanked the City of Montréal, which provided a critical tax credit of approximately $500,000. He added that the Town of Pointe-Claire has also worked closely with the company and provided important assistance.

"We are pleased to work with great companies who have demonstrated a strong commitment to the Montreal area and Quebec," said Minister Clement Gignac. "As partners with industry, we work hard to provide an environment that attracts investment and helps preserve and create new jobs."

The expansion of the plant, which currently employs 330 people, is expected to create additional employment opportunities. Also, during construction, 150 workers will be employed full-time. Additionally, many of the materials needed for the expansion have been bought from local suppliers.

The production expansion will increase annual production to 35 million units. The Claritin Syrup brand, for example, will be produced in Pointe-Claire for the U.S. market. The Aerius brand will be manufactured at this plant for the entire Canadian market. The expanded plant will also produce liquids, creams and ointments for U.S. and Canadian markets.
