TORONTO, June 25 /CNW/ - The City of Toronto opened 19 temporary waste
sites for disposal of residential and Yellow Bag garbage today starting at
3 p.m.. These will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week, and will
supplement the seven waste transfer stations already in operation.
When bringing waste to a drop-off site, residents should combine Green
Bin materials with other garbage. The waste must be double-bagged and securely
tied. Residents can also help elderly and disabled neighbours by offering to
take their garbage to a drop-off site.
It is possible these locations may be picketed, so there may be delays at
the sites and residents are asked to be patient and cooperative.
A map of the city indicating the locations of all the garbage drop-off
sites including transfer stations can be found at www.toronto.ca. The

The 19 temporary drop-off locations were selected based on the following
criteria:
- the site is a City-owned property;
- preference is given to existing paved or gravel areas to minimize
environmental impacts;
- is close to and reasonably accessible by the community;
- has vehicular access;
- there is reasonable distance away from residential buildings; and
- has the capacity to hold a large volume of waste if necessary.Garbage stored at the temporary sites will be contained within a fenced
enclosure. Residents must place all waste in the fenced area only. The sites
will have 24-hour security and will be monitored by City staff.
The locations will also be managed with professional pest and odour
controls. All sites have received approval from the provincial Ministry of the
Environment for use as temporary garbage storage sites. Inspectors from
Toronto Public Health will monitor the sites to ensure public health is not
compromised by the drop off sites.
Residents should continue to store recyclables, yard waste and bulky
items until the labour disruption is over. Once their Blue Bin is full,
residents should store recyclables in clear plastic bags. They are also
requested to postpone garden trimming and pruning and use a backyard composter
to compost yard waste and organics where possible.All Toronto residents are asked:
- Not to throw garbage onto streets, into laneways or parks
- Not to leave waste in or around City litter bins. These will not be
emptied during the disruption.The City will not condone illegal dumping, which would include dropping
waste near, but not within the fencing of the drop off site, as well as other
locations like City parks or streets. City bylaw officers will monitor the
sites and the fine for illegal dumping starts at $380.

Residential curbside garbage, Green Bin and recycling collection is
cancelled in all areas of the city except Etobicoke.
All city-wide yard waste, white goods (e.g. fridges and stoves),
household hazardous waste, ElectroVan and HazMobile collection is cancelled,
including in Etobicoke.
Residents are encouraged to properly package and store their garbage
where possible. Continue to separate Green Bin materials, recyclables and
other garbage. Please do not place any items out at the curb.
For houses with no collection services:
During the labour disruption, you may drop off your garbage at one of
seven City transfer stations or at one of the 19 temporary drop-off locations
across Toronto. Hours of operation and directions are provided below. You may
experience delays at the sites. The City appreciates your patience,
understanding and cooperation during this time.
Please continue to store recyclables, yard waste and bulky items until
the labour disruption is resolved. Once your Blue Bin is full, continue to
store recyclables in clear plastic bags. Residents should continue to separate
Green Bin materials from other garbage until they require disposal. When
bringing materials for disposal, please combine Green Bin materials with other
garbage, place in securely tied, double plastic bags and bring to any of the
drop-off locations.To minimize the amount of waste, please:
- Postpone garden trimming and pruning
- Use a backyard composter for yard waste and organics (no meat or dairy
products should be composted)
Residents are asked:
- To help elderly and persons with disabilities in their neighbourhood
by offering to take their garbage to the designated nearest drop-off
locations
- Not to throw garbage onto streets, into laneways or parks
- Not to leave litter or waste at litter bins. These will not be emptied
during the disruption.Deliveries of pre-ordered new and additional residential Garbage and Blue
Bins will continue.
Existing requests for repairs or exchanges of residential bins will be
postponed until the labour disruption has ended.
When the labour disruption ends, residents will be able to put out their
additional garbage, without requiring the use of a bag tag, and it will be
picked up free of charge.
Apartment Buildings and Condominiums
Apartment and condominium superintendents: please visit the City of
Toronto website at www.toronto.ca to determine if collection at your building
will continue.
Please have containers ready for collection the night before as
collection times and days may vary.Commercial - Yellow bag program customers only
- Yellow bag program collection is cancelled.
- Yellow bag customers may deliver their waste to a transfer station or
one of the 19 temporary drop-off free of charge. There is no need to
use a yellow bag. Please double bag waste in regular plastic garbage
bags.
- Yellow bag customers dropping off a large number of bags should be
prepared to show either a business card or business letterhead to
identify themselves as program customers. Commercial - all other
businesses (non-yellow bag customers)
- Commercial waste from all other businesses will be weighed and subject
to a $100 per tonne tip fee. All odorous commercial waste must be
double bagged.

Two transfer stations will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week to
accept both residential and commercial garbage:
