Patients' group applauds Ontario's establishment of expert infertility and adoption panel

TORONTO, July 11 /CNW Telbec/ - The Infertility Awareness Association of
Canada (IAAC), the national body representing Canadians with infertility,
applauds the Government of Ontario, Premier Dalton McGuinty and Minister Deb
Matthews' decision to establish the Infertility and Adoption Secretariat, and
endorses the composition of its Expert Panel.
"In the last election, Premier McGuinty made a promise to Ontarians
struggling to build a family; a promise he is keeping with today's
announcement," states Jocelyn Smith, President of the Infertility Awareness
Association of Canada. "We believe that the decision to establish the
Infertility and Adoption Secretariat is a clear indication that the government
of Ontario recognizes the struggle infertile Ontarians face, and demonstrates
an understanding of the need for a fairer, safer and more effective provincial
system."
IAAC's Executive Director Beverly Hanck notes that as the national voice
of the infertile community, IAAC has long advocated for governments to pursue
an approach which seeks to ease the barriers and hurdles faced in the pursuit
of building a family. "Beyond the obvious need to ease the enormous financial
burdens of treatment," she says, "governments must also ensure the quality and
delivery of that treatment, pursue a policy of early screening and encourage
enhanced fertility awareness throughout the healthcare system. This must be
part of a compassionate and comprehensive approach to the health of its
citizens."
"We strongly believe," adds Jocelyn Smith, "that the establishment of the
Infertility and Adoption Secretariat and the strong composition of its Expert
Panel - which includes the necessary participation of both patients and care
givers - will help ensure that Ontario's ultimate approach to family-building
supports and services will indeed become a model for the rest of Canada and
for the world."
